List of products by brand DOMAINE LOUIS CHEZE
Domaine Louis Cheze is one of the most serious addresses in the Saint-Joseph appellation. From 35 hectares of granite slopes above the right bank of the Rhône at Limony in Ardèche, the Chèze family produces Syrah-based reds and whites from Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier that speak clearly of the mineral character of this northern Rhône terroir.
An estate built from a single hectare since 1978
When Louis Chèze took over the property in 1978, he had just one hectare of Saint-Joseph vines to his name. What followed was a patient, methodical expansion across the steep granite coteaux of Limony — terraces that demand hand-harvesting and constant attention, but reward the effort with wines of real definition. Over four decades, the estate grew to its current 35 hectares, always with the same focus on site expression over volume.
Granite, slope and the right bank of the Rhône
The vineyards of Domaine Louis Cheze sit on the coteaux of Limony, on the right bank of the Rhône in the southern Ardèche. The soils are predominantly decomposed granite — poor, well-drained, and ideally suited to Syrah, which here produces wines with the characteristic peppery lift and dark-fruited depth of the northern Rhône. The whites, drawn from Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier, benefit from the same stony, mineral base, gaining texture and aromatic complexity without sacrificing freshness. Yields are deliberately restrained, ranging from 25 to 40 hl/ha depending on the cuvée, a discipline that underpins the quality across the range.
A family estate, now in its second and third generation
Today, Domaine Louis Cheze is very much a family affair. Louis's children, Camille and Benoît Chèze, have taken on an active role in both the vineyard and the cellar, bringing continuity and a shared commitment to the estate's founding principles. Beyond Saint-Joseph, the family has also been a driving force in the revival of the ancient Roman terroir of Seyssuel — the Vignobles de Seyssuel — a project they have championed since 2000, producing wines from one of the Rhône Valley's most historically significant and least-known sites.
The wines of Domaine Louis Cheze
The estate produces both red and white wines under the Saint-Joseph appellation, with several distinct cuvées reflecting different parcels and levels of élevage:
- Saint-Joseph Rouge — Syrah from the granite slopes of Limony; expect dark fruit, white pepper and a firm but refined tannic structure suited to the cellar.
- Saint-Joseph Blanc — Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier; generous in texture, with floral and stone-fruit character underpinned by the mineral freshness of the granite terroir.
- Vignobles de Seyssuel — a separate project on the historic Roman coteaux north of Condrieu, producing wines of notable depth and rarity from this rediscovered appellation.
Why we have selected Domaine Louis Cheze
At Halles Quercamps, we have listed Domaine Louis Cheze because it represents exactly what we look for in a northern Rhône producer: a clear sense of place, honest yields, and wines that improve with time in the cellar. The granite of Limony gives the Syrah a precision and a mineral backbone that sets it apart from the broader, more opulent styles found further south in the Vallée du Rhône. The whites, too, are made with real seriousness — not an afterthought. This is an estate for those who appreciate the intellectual rigour of the northern Rhône alongside genuine drinking pleasure. We recommend the reds alongside roast lamb or game, and the whites with river fish, grilled langoustines or a well-aged Comté.
