French Viognier Wines — Condrieu and the Rhône's Most Perfumed White

Viognier is a white wine variety of extraordinary character — intensely perfumed, full-bodied, and unlike almost anything else produced in France. For much of the 20th century it was nearly extinct; today it has been rediscovered and planted across the south of France, but its greatest expressions remain on the steep granite terraces of the Northern Rhône.

Condrieu — Viognier's Spiritual Home

Condrieu is the appellation that defines what Viognier can achieve at its peak. Located just south of Vienne, this tiny appellation (around 200 hectares) produces France's most celebrated Viognier from steep granite terraces above the Rhône.

Character: White peach, apricot, violet, honeysuckle, jasmine — with a rich, full-bodied texture and relatively low acidity. At its best, Condrieu is almost impossibly perfumed, combining the generosity of southern fruit with the minerality of granite terroir.

Château-Grillet — a single-estate appellation entirely within Condrieu, one of France's smallest AOCs, producing Viognier of remarkable complexity and longevity.

Viognier Beyond Condrieu

The variety is now planted across southern France, offering excellent value:

→    Côtes du Rhône — many excellent Viogniers at accessible prices, often blended with Marsanne or Roussanne

→    Ardèche — IGP wines from the region produce some of the best-value Viognier in France

→    Languedoc — Viognier has flourished in the warm south, producing expressive, fruit-forward wines

→    Côte-Rôtie — Viognier is legally permitted as a blending component (up to 20%) with Syrah in this famous red wine appellation, adding perfume and softness

Viognier Food Pairing

Viognier's aromatic richness pairs beautifully with:

→    Spiced chicken and poultry — the wine's floral character echoes the perfume of spiced dishes

→    Lobster and rich seafood — the body and richness match shellfish perfectly

→    Thai and Asian cuisine — particularly good with lemongrass, ginger, and coconut

→    Soft cheeses — Brie, Camembert, creamy goat's cheese

→    Dishes with stone fruit — apricot, peach sauces complement the wine's primary fruit

Serving Viognier

Unlike many white wines, Viognier benefits from slightly warmer serving temperature — 12–14°C rather than the standard 8–10°C. This allows its aromatic complexity to fully express itself. Young Condrieu is generally best enjoyed within 3–6 years; aged examples develop extraordinary nutty, oxidative complexity.
