Champagne Magnums — The Celebration Format Par Excellence
The magnum — 150cl, equivalent to two standard bottles — is widely considered the ideal format for ageing and serving Champagne. The larger volume means the wine ages more slowly and gracefully, developing greater complexity while retaining freshness. At a party or celebration, a magnum is also simply magnificent: impressive to present, generous in measure, and a statement of genuine festive intent.

Champagne Magnums: Why Bigger is Better
Among wine professionals and serious collectors, the magnum is widely considered the optimal format for Champagne. The reasons are both practical and aesthetic — and once you have opened a magnum of great Champagne for a celebration, it is difficult to go back.
Why Magnums Age Better
The relationship between wine and oxygen is critical to ageing. In a standard bottle, the ratio of oxygen in the headspace to wine volume is relatively high. In a magnum, this ratio is halved — the same amount of oxygen is in contact with twice as much wine.
The result: the wine ages more slowly, more gracefully, and with greater complexity. The bubbles in a magnum are typically finer; the flavour development is more nuanced; the freshness is better preserved over time.
Most serious Champagne collectors prefer to cellar in magnums precisely for this reason.
The Celebration Factor
Beyond the technical advantages, there is something undeniably magnificent about a magnum of Champagne. It says:
→ This occasion matters
→ We are here to celebrate properly
→ There is enough for everyone
A magnum of Champagne at a wedding, a significant birthday, or a New Year's celebration creates a moment. It is generosity made visible.
Practical Considerations
→ Serves 10–12 glasses — ideal for a table of 6–8 for a toast, or 4 people who plan to linger
→ Temperature — magnums take longer to chill; allow at least 3 hours in the refrigerator
→ Opening — the same technique as a standard bottle, but with two hands essential
→ Decanting — not typically required, but a large wine glass (Burgundy-style) allows the full bouquet to express itself
