Long before Malbec became synonymous with Argentina, it was a proud French variety — the backbone of Cahors, one of France's most ancient wine regions. In Cahors, Malbec (locally called Auxerrois or Côt) produces wines of extraordinary structure and character that have almost nothing in common with the plush, fruit-forward New World versions.

Cahors: The Black Wine of France

The wines of Cahors have been called "black wine" (vin noir) for centuries — a reference to their extraordinary depth of colour and concentration. The Lot River valley, with its mix of limestone causses and alluvial terraces, produces Malbec of remarkable structure, mineral character, and ageing potential.

The best Cahors wines need 5-10 years of cellaring to reveal their full character. With age, they develop extraordinary complexity: dried fruit, leather, tobacco, earthy mineral notes, and a firm but integrated tannic structure.
