For too long, Gamay has been dismissed as a grape that produces only simple, fruity Beaujolais Nouveau. This perception, while commercially driven, does a profound disservice to one of France's most interesting and food-friendly varieties — particularly in the hands of the talented vignerons working the ten Beaujolais crus.

The Ten Beaujolais Crus

The crus represent the pinnacle of Beaujolais winemaking, each with its own distinct character shaped by soil type, aspect, and altitude:

Morgon — The most structured and age-worthy of the crus. Wines from the Côte du Py can rival fine Burgundy in their depth and longevity, showing cherry, kirsch, and earthy, almost volcanic mineral character.

Moulin-à-Vent — Known as the "Lord of Beaujolais," these wines are the most powerful and age-worthy in the region, often developing Pinot Noir-like characteristics with time.

Fleurie — Elegant and perfumed, true to its name. The most feminine of the crus, offering violet and peony aromas with a silky texture.

Brouilly — The largest cru, producing fresh, rounded, approachable wines with excellent fruit expression.

Côte de Brouilly — The hillside above Brouilly, producing more concentrated and structured wines from the volcanic blue stone soils.

Chénas — The rarest and smallest cru, offering wines of power and elegance at very attractive prices.

Juliénas — One of the oldest crus, producing structured, floral wines with excellent ageing potential.

Saint-Amour — Light, charming, and delightfully perfumed — perfect for Valentine's Day and spring entertaining.

Chiroubles — The highest-altitude cru, producing the lightest and most ethereal Beaujolais wines.

Régnié — The newest cru designation (1988), producing soft, fruity, early-drinking wines.

The Halles de Quercamps Connection to Beaujolais

Our co-owner Camille François is from a winemaking family in Beaujolais (the Thorin family), giving us unique insight into this region and privileged access to some of its finest producers. Her personal relationships with vignerons mean we can offer wines that rarely appear on the UK market.
