French White Wine £20–£50 — Where France's White Wine Greatness Begins
The £20–£50 range marks the entry point for France's truly great white wines. While there is exceptional value below this level, this bracket is where the most prestigious appellations and the finest producers become accessible.
What Opens Up at This Price Level
Burgundy Premier Cru Chardonnay — Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet premier crus begin to appear at the upper end of this range from négociants and some domaines. These are benchmark expressions of the world's most famous Chardonnay terroir.
Alsace Grand Cru — the finest single-vineyard Rieslings, Gewurztraminers, and Pinot Gris from Alsace's classified Grand Crus become accessible. These are wines of genuine complexity and ageing potential.
Condrieu — the Northern Rhône's great Viognier appellation falls squarely in this range. A serious, perfumed white wine experience unlike almost anything else in France.
Hermitage Blanc and Crozes-Hermitage Blanc — Marsanne and Roussanne from the Northern Rhône at their most serious. Hermitage Blanc particularly deserves greater recognition as one of the world's great white wines.
Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre — the great Sauvignon Blanc appellations of the Loire reach their finest expressions here, from serious single-vineyard producers.
Ageing Potential
Many wines in this range are designed to age. Burgundy Premier Crus, Alsace Grand Crus, and Hermitage Blanc can all develop significant complexity over 5–15 years. If you're buying to drink now, decanting is often beneficial.
