Crémant d'Alsace — France's Finest Sparkling Wine Value

Crémant d'Alsace is France's most commercially successful Crémant appellation — and for good reason. Made by the méthode traditionnelle (the same process as Champagne — secondary fermentation in the bottle, extended lees ageing), from Alsace's aromatic varieties on chalk and granite soils, it produces sparkling wines of genuine quality and distinctive personality at prices that make Champagne look expensive.

Production

Crémant d'Alsace must be aged on its lees for a minimum of nine months (compared to 12 months for NV Champagne and 36 for vintage Champagne). Many of the best producers age significantly longer, developing the autolytic complexity — biscuit, brioche, yeast — associated with quality sparkling wine.

The principal varieties used include Pinot Blanc (the most common, providing freshness and volume), Pinot Gris (adding texture and spice), Auxerrois (aromatic and round), Pinot Noir (for Rosé and fuller-bodied styles), and Riesling (for precision and mineral character).
