Based in Cessenon-sur-Orb in the Hérault, Domaine Laurent Miquel farms 200 hectares under certified organic agriculture across the Languedoc appellation. A winemaking family since 1791, Laurent — a trained engineer — took over in 1996 as the eighth generation and made history as the first producer to grow Albariño in France. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this estate for the coherence of its viticultural project, the diversity of its terroirs — limestone at Cazal Viel, clay-limestone at Auzines — and the precision of its reds, whites, and rosés. A benchmark address for anyone wishing to explore the full depth of the Languedoc.

Founded in 1791, Domaine Laurent Miquel represents eight generations of unbroken commitment to the vineyards of Cessenon-sur-Orb, in the heart of the Hérault. With 200 hectares farmed under certified organic agriculture, this is one of the most serious and coherent estates in the Languedoc today.

A family estate rooted in the history of the Languedoc

The Miquel family has cultivated these lands since the Ancien Régime — a continuity that is rare even by the standards of the French wine world. When Laurent took over the estate in 1996, he brought with him the rigour of an engineering background, applying a methodical, evidence-led approach to viticulture and winemaking. Far from breaking with tradition, he deepened it: rationalising the vineyard management, investing in the understanding of each terroir, and gradually converting the entire 200-hectare holding to certified organic farming. Today, Domaine Laurent Miquel stands as a reference point in the Languedoc-Roussillon region — a producer whose longevity is matched by a genuine appetite for progress.

Two distinct terroirs, one coherent vision

The estate's vineyards are spread across two principal sites, each with its own character. At Cazal Viel, the soils are predominantly limestone, lending freshness and definition to the wines grown there — particularly the whites and the more aromatic cuvées. At Auzines, clay-limestone soils bring greater body and depth, well suited to the estate's red varieties. Across both sites, the grape palette is broad and considered: Syrah, Grenache, and Cinsaut anchor the reds and rosés, while Viognier, Chardonnay, and Albariño drive the whites. Yields range from 25 to 70 hl/ha depending on the cuvée — a deliberate spread that reflects the estate's range from approachable, fruit-driven wines to more concentrated, terroir-focused bottlings.

A pioneer: the first Albariño in France

One of Laurent Miquel's most distinctive contributions to French viticulture is his introduction of Albariño — the aromatic white variety native to Galicia and northern Portugal — to the Languedoc. He remains to this day the first and longest-established producer of Albariño in France, a decision that speaks to both his curiosity and his confidence in the potential of his terroir to accommodate varieties beyond the regional canon.

The wine range at Domaine Laurent Miquel

The estate produces red, white, and rosé wines across the Languedoc appellation, with a range designed to reflect the diversity of its terroirs and grape varieties:

  • Reds: Syrah and Grenache-led cuvées with structure and southern warmth, from everyday drinking wines to more ambitious, cellar-worthy bottlings.
  • Whites: Viognier and Chardonnay expressions of real precision, alongside the estate's distinctive Albariño — aromatic, saline, and unlike anything else in the Languedoc.
  • Rosés: Cinsaut-based, dry and refreshing, with the characteristic pale colour and delicate fruit of the southern French style.

Why we have selected Domaine Laurent Miquel

At Halles Quercamps, we look for producers who combine a clear sense of place with genuine technical ambition — and Domaine Laurent Miquel delivers both. The estate's organic certification across 200 hectares is a statement of intent, not a marketing exercise. The diversity of terroirs at Cazal Viel and Auzines gives the range real breadth, and Laurent's decision to plant Albariño demonstrates the kind of independent thinking we admire in a producer. We recommend this estate particularly to those building a broader picture of the Languedoc in their cellar, and to anyone curious about how southern French viticulture is evolving. At the table, the whites pair beautifully with grilled fish, shellfish, and goat's cheese; the reds are well suited to lamb, slow-cooked meats, and hard sheep's milk cheeses.
