List of products by brand CHATEAU HAUT-BERGERON
Château Haut-Bergeron is one of the most consistently rewarding addresses in the Sauternes appellation. Based in Preignac, in the Gironde, this organically farmed château brings together nine generations of family commitment and a medal record that commands genuine respect.
A château rooted in the history of Sauternes
Founded in 1756, Château Haut-Bergeron passed into the Lamothe family in 1820 — and has remained there ever since. Today, Hervé and Patrick Lamothe continue a demanding approach to viticulture across 37 hectares of carefully tended vines on the south-facing slopes of Preignac. With nine generations behind them, the Lamothes have had the time to understand their terroir intimately, and it shows in every bottle. The château holds the distinction of being the most decorated in the Sauternes appellation, with 118 medals — 68 of them gold — awarded since 1964. That record is not the result of a single vintage or a fortunate run; it reflects a house style built on rigour, patience, and a deep knowledge of what this corner of Bordeaux can produce.
Terroir: gravel, clay, and limestone on the slopes of Preignac
The 37-hectare vineyard sits on south-facing hillsides, a position that maximises ripening and encourages the development of botrytis cinerea — the noble rot that is the engine of all great Sauternes. The soils are divided broadly into two types: approximately two-thirds are clay-gravel over a clay subsoil, offering good drainage while retaining sufficient moisture to sustain the vines through the long growing season. The remaining third is clay-limestone over bedrock, adding a mineral tension that lifts the wines and prevents them from tipping into heaviness. The three classic Sauternes varieties — Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle — are grown here, with Sémillon providing the structural backbone and capacity for long ageing, Sauvignon Blanc contributing freshness and aromatic lift, and Muscadelle adding a delicate floral note.
Organic farming: a genuine commitment
Château Haut-Bergeron is certified in organic agriculture (Agriculture Biologique). For the Lamothe family, this is not a recent marketing decision but a considered choice to work with the land rather than against it. Organic viticulture in Sauternes presents particular challenges — the humid conditions that encourage noble rot also demand vigilance against unwanted disease pressure — making the commitment here all the more meaningful.
The wines of Château Haut-Bergeron
The château produces exclusively white wines under the Sauternes appellation. The range centres on the classic liquoreux style for which the appellation is celebrated:
- Sauternes (white, sweet) — the estate's signature wine, combining richness and freshness from the clay-gravel and clay-limestone terroirs, with the depth that comes from nine generations of winemaking experience.
Why we have selected Château Haut-Bergeron
At Halles Quercamps, we do not list Sauternes lightly. The appellation demands patience — from the grower, from the winemaker, and from the buyer. We have selected Château Haut-Bergeron for three reasons that matter to us as merchants. First, the consistency of quality across vintages: 118 medals over six decades is not luck, it is method. Second, the sincerity of the organic approach: farming without synthetic inputs in a region where disease pressure is real takes genuine conviction. Third, the balance of the wines themselves: these are Sauternes that offer concentration without cloying weight, and freshness that makes them genuinely versatile at the table. We recommend them to anyone building a cellar of serious sweet wines, and equally to those seeking a considered gift for a confirmed wine lover. At the table, they are superb with Roquefort or a ripe Époisses, and equally fine alongside a classic foie gras.
