List of products by brand BORIE DE MAUREL
Settled at the foot of the Montagne Noire in Félines-Minervois, Borie de Maurel has been producing some of the most characterful wines in the Minervois appellation since 1989 — reds of real depth, a Marsanne white, and rosés drawn from a mosaic of contrasting terroirs, all farmed organically across 35 hectares.
A domaine born from a remarkable change of course
In 1989, Michel Escande, then a professional sailing instructor, made the decision to leave the sea behind and plant roots in the Hérault. Settling in Félines-Minervois, he established Borie de Maurel from the ground up — a venture that owed nothing to inherited vines and everything to personal conviction. Alongside his wife Sylvie, Michel built the estate methodically, learning the rhythms of the land and the demands of the Minervois appellation with the same focus he had once applied to reading wind and tide.
The estate's reputation was cemented early. The cuvée Sylla, a Mourvèdre-led red of considerable depth and structure, drew the attention of the international wine press during the 1990s — a remarkable achievement for a young domaine in a region that was still finding its footing on the world stage. That early recognition set the tone: Borie de Maurel has never chased volume, preferring instead to let the terroir speak clearly through restrained, precise winemaking.
Terroir: two distinct soil types, one coherent vision
The 35 hectares divide into two broad soil families. The lower, warmer parcels sit on clay-limestone over sandstone bedrock — soils that retain heat and yield generous, structured reds well suited to Mourvèdre and Grenache. Higher up, reaching towards 300 metres of altitude on the foothills of the Montagne Noire, the estate works cooler, stonier ground: scree of marl, limestone, schist, and red marble, which bring freshness and aromatic lift to the wines. This contrast between the two soil types is not incidental — it is the foundation of the estate's blending philosophy, allowing the Escande family to compose wines of both warmth and definition.
The grape varieties planted reflect the full palette of the Languedoc-Roussillon: Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, and Syrah for the reds and rosés; Marsanne for the white. Each variety finds its place according to soil and exposure, with the most demanding — Mourvèdre in particular — reserved for the warmest, best-drained positions.
Organic farming: a long-standing commitment
Borie de Maurel holds organic certification (Agriculture Biologique), a status that reflects a genuine and long-held approach to viticulture rather than a recent marketing decision. Working without synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fertilisers, the estate relies on careful canopy management, cover crops, and attentive observation of each parcel. In a region where summer heat and drought can make organic farming a genuine challenge, this commitment carries real weight.
The wine range
Borie de Maurel produces red, white, and rosé wines under the Minervois appellation and the broader Languedoc designation. The range is built around a handful of clearly defined cuvées:
- Reds — the backbone of the estate, led by Mourvèdre and Syrah, ranging from approachable, fruit-forward blends to the structured, cellar-worthy cuvée Sylla.
- White — a Marsanne-based wine of texture and restraint, relatively rare in the Minervois and a genuine point of difference for the estate.
- Rosé — fresh and precise, drawing on Cinsault and Grenache from the higher, cooler parcels.
Why we have selected Borie de Maurel
We have listed Borie de Maurel because it represents something increasingly valuable in the Languedoc-Roussillon: a family estate with a clear identity, a coherent terroir-driven approach, and a track record stretching back more than thirty years. The Escande family have never deviated from their founding principles — organic farming, honest yields, and blending that reflects the land rather than the market.
The estate suits the wine lover who wants to explore Minervois beyond the obvious, or who is building a cellar with an eye on southern French reds that age with grace. The cuvée Sylla in particular rewards patience. At the table, these wines pair naturally with slow-roasted lamb, aged sheep's cheese from the nearby Pyrénées foothills, or a generous daube provençale. The Marsanne white is a fine match for grilled fish with herbs or a ripe, creamy cheese.
