List of products by brand DOMAINE PHILIPPE ALLIET
Domaine Philippe Alliet stands among the most dependable references in the Chinon appellation. Based at Cravant-les-Coteaux in Indre-et-Loire, the estate embodies an exacting vision of Loire Cabernet Franc, carried forward since 1978 by three generations of the Alliet family.
A family estate rooted in the terroirs of Cravant-les-Coteaux
In 1978, Philippe Alliet — third generation of a family of vignerons — took over the family estate and set about a thorough transformation of its vineyards and its ambitions. Through the 1990s, at a time when Chinon was still finding its footing as a serious appellation, Philippe developed a style that was precise, terroir-driven and markedly individual: wines of genuine depth built on restraint rather than extraction. His approach drew attention well beyond the Loire Valley and helped establish Chinon's credentials among informed collectors.
In 2005, his son Pierre joined the estate, bringing renewed energy and a shared commitment to the principles his father had established. Today, the estate is run as a true family enterprise — Philippe, Claude and Pierre Alliet working in concert across 17 hectares of vines.
Terroir and viticulture
The estate's vineyards lie on the slopes and plateaux around Cravant-les-Coteaux, one of the most prized communes within the Chinon AOC. The soils are varied — clay-limestone, clay-siliceous and gravelly — each lending a distinct character to the wines produced from them. Exposures are predominantly south-facing, ensuring optimal ripening of Cabernet Franc, the great red grape of Chinon, alongside a small proportion of Chenin Blanc for the estate's white wines.
In the vineyard, the Alliet family follows biodynamic practices, though without seeking official certification. This is a considered choice rather than an oversight: the priority is the health of the soil and the vine, not the label. Treatments are kept to a strict minimum, yields are managed carefully, and the rhythm of the vineyard is guided by a respect for natural cycles that goes well beyond conventional viticulture.
Winemaking philosophy
In the cellar, the approach mirrors the restraint of the vineyard. Vinification is conducted with the aim of expressing terroir rather than imposing a winemaking signature. The wines are given the time they need — in barrel or in vat — to develop their character organically. The result is a range of Chinons that reward patience: structured, precise, and capable of genuine ageing.
The wine range at Domaine Philippe Alliet
The estate produces wines in two colours across the Chinon appellation, each reflecting a distinct soil type or parcel selection:
- Chinon Rouge — Cabernet Franc from clay-limestone, clay-siliceous and gravelly terroirs; several cuvées of varying depth and ageing potential, from approachable to cellar-worthy.
- Chinon Blanc — Chenin Blanc vinified with the same rigour as the reds; a rarer style that underlines the appellation's versatility.
Why we have selected Domaine Philippe Alliet
We have listed Domaine Philippe Alliet because it represents something increasingly valuable: a producer who has shaped an appellation's identity without compromising on integrity. Philippe's work in the 1990s helped redefine what Chinon could be, and the estate has maintained that standard across three decades and two generations.
We are particularly drawn to the coherence between vineyard and cellar — biodynamic practices pursued on their own terms, and a winemaking hand that knows when to step back. These are wines that speak clearly of their origins in Cravant-les-Coteaux, and they do so without artifice.
We recommend this estate to confirmed lovers of Loire reds who appreciate structure and finesse over immediate fruit, and to those building a cellar with an eye on the medium to long term. At the table, the Chinon reds are a natural companion to roast lamb, game birds or a well-aged goat's cheese from the Loire itself.
