List of products by brand DOMAINE COURSODON
Domaine Coursodon has established itself over several decades as one of the most authoritative names in the Saint-Joseph appellation, working steep hillside terraces above the Rhône at Mauves in the Ardèche, on soils of granite and schist that give its wines a clarity and tension rarely matched in the northern Rhône.
A family estate rooted in the history of Saint-Joseph
The story of Domaine Coursodon begins at the close of the nineteenth century, when Jean-Auguste and Antonin Coursodon planted the first vines on the terraced slopes above Mauves. Over five generations, the estate has remained entirely within the family — a continuity that is reflected in the consistency and confidence of the wines. Jérôme Coursodon, the fifth generation, joined his father Pierre in 1998 and has since guided the estate to a position of genuine reference within Saint-Joseph. His approach combines a deep respect for inherited practice with a clear-eyed pursuit of precision: lower intervention in the cellar, attentive work in the vineyard, and an unwavering focus on expressing what these particular slopes have to offer.
Terroir: granite, schist, and the Rhône at one's feet
The estate's 16 hectares are planted on the sharply inclined coteaux of Mauves, one of the historic communes of the Saint-Joseph appellation in the Vallée du Rhône. The vineyards face due south and overlook the Rhône from terraces that demand entirely manual work — there is no room for machinery on slopes this steep. The soils are a mix of granite and schist, both well-drained and mineral-rich, imposing natural vigour control on the vines and lending the wines their characteristic finesse and grip. Syrah dominates the red plantings, while Marsanne and Roussanne account for the white wines — varieties ideally suited to these sun-drenched, well-ventilated hillsides.
HVE certification and a commitment to the land
Domaine Coursodon holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification, reflecting a genuine commitment to sustainable viticulture: preserving biodiversity, reducing inputs, and working with the natural rhythms of the vineyard. This is not a recent marketing decision but a logical extension of the family's long-standing relationship with their land.
The wines: reds and whites of real character
- Saint-Joseph Rouge (Syrah): structured, deep, and mineral, with the characteristic pepper and dark fruit of northern Rhône Syrah grown on granite. The wines reward patience and age gracefully in the cellar.
- Saint-Joseph Blanc (Marsanne, Roussanne): taut and precise, with a stony minerality and restrained richness. These are whites of real substance — capable of ageing and often underestimated by those unfamiliar with the appellation.
Why we have selected Domaine Coursodon
We have listed Domaine Coursodon because it represents everything we look for in a northern Rhône estate: a clear sense of place, meticulous work in the vineyard, and wines that speak directly of their terroir without artifice. The élevage is precise, the whites show a mineral tension that sets them apart from more opulent styles, and the reds carry the depth and structure that Saint-Joseph at its best can achieve. We recommend these wines to confirmed enthusiasts of the Vallée du Rhône — and equally to those who know Hermitage or Crozes-Hermitage and are ready to explore a neighbouring appellation of comparable seriousness. At the table, the reds pair beautifully with lamb, game, or aged hard cheeses; the whites are a natural match for river fish, white meats, or a well-aged Comté.
