List of products by brand CHATEAU MARGAUX

Château Margaux extends across 262 hectares at Margaux-Cantenac in the Gironde, at the heart of the Bordeaux appellation, on gravelly croupes widely regarded as among the finest on the Left Bank. Restructured from 1572 by the de Lestonnac family and classified a 1er Grand Cru in 1855, the château was decisively revived from 1977 under André Mentzelopoulos; his family continues to lead the estate today, with Alexis Mentzelopoulos at the helm since 2023. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the coherence of its vineyard, the precision of its Cabernet Sauvignon-led assemblages, and the singular character of its dry white, Pavillon Blanc, produced entirely from Sauvignon Blanc. A Bordeaux landmark we are proud to offer.

Château Margaux stands as one of the most complete expressions of the Bordeaux appellation: 262 hectares at Margaux-Cantenac, classified a 1er Grand Cru in 1855, and guided since 1977 by the Mentzelopoulos family across some of the most celebrated gravel soils on the Left Bank.

A terroir of graves shaped over centuries

Situated in the commune of Margaux-Cantenac in the Gironde, the vineyard of Château Margaux rests on a geological foundation that is among the most distinctive in the Médoc. The soils combine graves garonnaises — rounded alluvial pebbles deposited by the Garonne — with sandy clay and a subsoil of limestone, all set across gently elevated croupes between 8 and 15 metres. This natural drainage, combined with the heat-retaining properties of the gravel, creates the conditions that give Margaux its characteristic finesse and aromatic lift. The vines are planted across these undulating ridges, where the interplay of soil depth and exposure shapes the character of each parcel.

From the de Lestonnac family to the Mentzelopoulos era

The history of Château Margaux as a coherent wine estate begins in earnest between 1572 and 1582, when the de Lestonnac family restructured and consolidated the property into the form we broadly recognise today. That long heritage was formally acknowledged when the château was classified a 1er Grand Cru Classé in the landmark 1855 classification — a distinction it has held without interruption. The modern chapter opened in 1977, when André Mentzelopoulos acquired the château and embarked on a thorough programme of restoration and investment, both in the vineyard and in the cellars. The transformation was swift and lasting. Today, the estate is led by Alexis Mentzelopoulos, who became chairman in 2023, continuing a family commitment to quality that has defined the château for nearly five decades.

Viticulture and winemaking

The vineyard is planted principally to Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc for the red wines. A separate parcel is devoted to Sauvignon Blanc, the sole grape behind the estate's celebrated dry white. Winemaking at Château Margaux is guided by a respect for each parcel's individual character, with assemblage decisions taken to reflect the vintage rather than to impose a fixed formula. The result is a range of wines that express both the precision of the Margaux appellation and the ambition of a first growth.

The wines of Château Margaux

  • Château Margaux (Rouge) — The grand vin: a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend of great structure and aromatic complexity, built for the long term.
  • Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux — The second wine, sharing the same terroir and winemaking rigour, offering earlier accessibility without sacrificing depth.
  • Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux — A dry white produced entirely from Sauvignon Blanc; one of the most distinctive white wines in all of Bordeaux, combining tension, texture, and remarkable longevity.

Why we have selected Château Margaux

At Halles Quercamps, we do not list first growths as a matter of prestige alone. We list them when the wines genuinely justify their place — and at Château Margaux, they do. What distinguishes this château in our view is the coherence between terroir, viticulture, and the wines in the glass: the gravel croupes of Margaux-Cantenac are among the most expressive in Bordeaux, and the Mentzelopoulos family has had the patience and the means to let that terroir speak clearly. We are equally drawn to the breadth of the range: from the grand vin, which rewards a decade or more of cellaring, to Pavillon Blanc, a white Bordeaux that consistently surprises those encountering it for the first time. We recommend these wines to collectors building a serious cellar, to those seeking a considered gift for a significant occasion, and to any enthusiast who wishes to understand what the Margaux appellation, at its most focused, is genuinely capable of. At the table, the red wines are well suited to rack of lamb, aged beef, or a fine piece of hard cheese; Pavillon Blanc pairs beautifully with grilled turbot or a classic sole meunière.
