List of products by brand CHATEAU HAUT-BRION
Since 1525, Château Haut-Brion has represented the highest expression of Pessac-Léognan — a terroir of deep graves, an extraordinary continuity of vision, and wines among the most closely followed in the world.
Five centuries on the graves of Pessac
The vineyard extends across 51 hectares in Pessac, Gironde, planted on two gravel ridges — croupes de graves — rising to 32 metres above the plain. This topography ensures excellent drainage and a marked thermal advantage. Quartz pebbles over clay and sand stress the vine in precisely the right measure, concentrating aromatic expression in the fruit.
A history inseparable from the 1855 classification
Founded in 1525, Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux's oldest named estates. At the 1855 Universal Exhibition, it was the only château outside the Médoc awarded the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé — a distinction shared with just four others. In 1935, American banker Clarence Dillon purchased the property; his family has guided it ever since. Today it is managed by Domaine Clarence Dillon SAS, under Prince Robert de Luxembourg, Clarence Dillon's great-grandson.
Grape varieties and winemaking
Haut-Brion produces both red and white with equal seriousness. The red blends Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot; the white assembles Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The château's urban microclimate allows earlier ripening than most Médoc properties, lending suppleness and aromatic richness without sacrificing structure or ageing potential.
The wines of Château Haut-Brion
- Château Haut-Brion Rouge (Pessac-Léognan) — the grand vin, a Merlot-led blend of great depth, built for the cellar and capable of ageing over several decades.
- Château Haut-Brion Blanc (Pessac-Léognan) — one of the most sought-after dry white Bordeaux, produced in very limited quantities; precise, mineral, and remarkably age-worthy.
- Le Clarence de Haut-Brion Rouge — the second wine, offering access to the Haut-Brion terroir at an earlier stage of maturity.
- La Clarté de Haut-Brion Blanc — the second white, sharing the same varietal blend and meticulous approach as the grand vin blanc.
Why we have selected Château Haut-Brion
At Halles Quercamps, we list very few châteaux at this level — not for prestige, but for what they genuinely offer the informed buyer. Haut-Brion earns its place for three reasons: the gravel terroir of Pessac produces wines that are earthy, smoky, and deeply mineral — immediately recognisable and unlike anything else in Bordeaux; consistency across vintages is remarkable, even in difficult years; and the white wine remains, in our view, underappreciated relative to its quality.
We recommend these wines to collectors building a serious Bordeaux cellar and to those seeking a benchmark for the appellation. The rouge pairs beautifully with roast lamb, aged beef, or hard cheese; the blanc is superb alongside lobster, turbot, or a cream-finished chicken dish.
