Five centuries on the graves of Pessac

The vineyard extends across 51 hectares in Pessac, Gironde, planted on two gravel ridges — croupes de graves — rising to 32 metres above the plain. This topography ensures excellent drainage and a marked thermal advantage. Quartz pebbles over clay and sand stress the vine in precisely the right measure, concentrating aromatic expression in the fruit.

A history inseparable from the 1855 classification

Founded in 1525, Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux's oldest named estates. At the 1855 Universal Exhibition, it was the only château outside the Médoc awarded the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé — a distinction shared with just four others. In 1935, American banker Clarence Dillon purchased the property; his family has guided it ever since. Today it is managed by Domaine Clarence Dillon SAS, under Prince Robert de Luxembourg, Clarence Dillon's great-grandson.

Grape varieties and winemaking

Haut-Brion produces both red and white with equal seriousness. The red blends Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot; the white assembles Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The château's urban microclimate allows earlier ripening than most Médoc properties, lending suppleness and aromatic richness without sacrificing structure or ageing potential.
