Organic & Natural French Red Wines — Authentic Terroir, Zero Compromise

The growth of organic, biodynamic, and natural winemaking in France over the past two decades has been remarkable. What began as a fringe movement has become a mainstream commitment among serious producers — not as a marketing exercise, but as a philosophical statement about the relationship between viticulture and terroir.

Understanding the Labels

Organic (Bio): The grapes are grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers. In France, certification is provided by bodies such as Ecocert or Demeter. The EU organic wine label (since 2012) also covers cellar practices.

Biodynamic: A step beyond organic, biodynamic farming treats the vineyard as a self-sustaining ecosystem, using natural preparations, following lunar and cosmic rhythms, and working the soil to encourage biological diversity. Certified by Demeter or Biodyvin.

Natural Wine: A broader and less legally defined term, typically implying minimal or no sulphur addition, native yeast fermentation, no filtration or fining, and minimal other cellar interventions. The aim is wines of maximum terroir expression with minimum human intervention.

Our Approach

At Halles de Quercamps, we don't impose an ideological position on organic or natural wine. We support and sell wines from producers who farm responsibly — whether or not they hold official certification — because we believe that farming philosophy is directly reflected in the quality and character of the wine in the glass.

We have also noticed, through extensive tasting, that organically farmed vineyards tend to produce grapes of greater concentration and interest, particularly in average and challenging vintages. This translates into more complex, expressive wines.

Regions of Excellence

Beaujolais: A pioneering region for natural wine, partly due to the influence of Jules Chauvet, the "father of natural wine," who worked here in the mid-20th century. Some of our most exciting natural wine finds come from this region.

Loire Valley: Another region of natural wine innovation, with producers in Anjou and the Touraine leading the movement.

Burgundy: A growing number of domaines, from Chablis to the Côte de Nuits, have adopted organic and biodynamic practices, often at the instigation of a new generation taking over from parents.

Languedoc: The new frontier for organic viticulture in France, with hundreds of producers now certified and a culture of experimentation and openness to new approaches.
