Often overshadowed by its offspring — Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, both of which have Cabernet Franc in their lineage — this grape variety deserves to be discovered and celebrated in its own right. In the Loire Valley of France, Cabernet Franc achieves a purity and elegance that it rarely finds elsewhere in the world.

The Loire Valley: Cabernet Franc's Natural Home

Chinon is the most celebrated Cabernet Franc appellation, producing wines of remarkable elegance and food-friendliness from the tuffeau limestone around the town of Chinon. The best examples — from serious producers farming old vines — combine red fruit character with a distinctive herbaceousness, mineral freshness, and silky texture. Young Chinon can be served slightly cool for summer; mature examples (8+ years) open up to extraordinary complexity.

Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil — across the Loire river from Chinon — produce wines of similar character but often with more body and structure, particularly from the gravelly "tuffeaux" soils.

Saumur-Champigny — perhaps the most versatile Loire red — produces lighter, brighter Cabernet Franc wines with lovely fruit purity and excellent value, especially in warm vintages.

Anjou Rouge — a broader designation producing softer, accessible Cabernet Franc at very competitive prices.

Cabernet Franc in Bordeaux

On the right bank, Cabernet Franc plays a crucial supporting role in blends with Merlot, adding perfume, structure, and freshness. In the best Saint-Émilion châteaux, it can comprise up to 30-40% of the blend. Château Cheval Blanc, the greatest wine of Saint-Émilion, is typically over 55% Cabernet Franc.
