List of products by brand DOMAINE SAUGER
Domaine Sauger, based in Fresnes in the Loir-et-Cher, represents some of the most honest winemaking the Loire has to offer: genuine terroir wines shaped by five generations of careful husbandry, today certified Terra Vitis and spread across 30 hectares in the AOP Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny appellations.
A family estate with deep roots
The estate's history stretches back to 1870, when the Sauger family first established themselves in Fresnes. Over the following century, the domaine passed quietly from one generation to the next, remaining faithful to its appellation and its village. When Philippe Sauger took over in 1988, he inherited just 7 hectares — a modest holding by any measure. What followed was a patient, considered expansion: over the course of several decades, Philippe gradually built the estate to its present 30 hectares, never sacrificing quality for scale. That kind of long-term thinking, rare in any trade, is precisely what distinguishes a genuine family estate from a commercial operation.
Terroir: sandy-clay and siliceous soils in the Loire Valley
The vineyards of Domaine Sauger sit on the sandy-clay and siliceous soils characteristic of the Cheverny plateau, a terrain that encourages natural drainage and imparts a pleasing mineral tension to the wines. The appellation Cheverny — still relatively under the radar compared with Sancerre or Vouvray — produces wines of real freshness and definition, particularly from Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. The rarer Cour-Cheverny appellation, reserved exclusively for the indigenous Romorantin grape, adds a further dimension of local character to the estate's range. Together, these two Loire appellations give Philippe Sauger the breadth to work across white, red and rosé styles with genuine conviction.
Terra Vitis certification: a responsible approach to viticulture
Domaine Sauger holds Terra Vitis certification, a French scheme that sets rigorous standards for sustainable viticulture: reduced use of inputs, biodiversity management, traceability and social responsibility. It is a practical, verifiable commitment rather than a marketing label, and it reflects the estate's broader ethos — working the land with care, for the long term. The grape varieties cultivated across the 30 hectares include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay, Côt and Romorantin, a palette that speaks directly to the diversity of the Loire's viticultural heritage.
The wine range at Domaine Sauger
The estate produces wines across three colours, all within the Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny appellations:
- Whites (AOP Cheverny) — principally from Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay; crisp, aromatic and well-defined, with the characteristic freshness of the Loire's sandy-siliceous soils.
- Whites (AOP Cour-Cheverny) — made exclusively from Romorantin, an indigenous variety found almost nowhere else; structured, mineral and age-worthy, with a distinctive Loire character.
- Reds (AOP Cheverny) — blends typically based on Pinot Noir and Gamay, sometimes with Côt; light to medium-bodied, fruit-forward and pleasingly direct.
- Rosés (AOP Cheverny) — fresh and dry, suited to warm-weather drinking and informal occasions.
Why we have selected Domaine Sauger
At Halles Quercamps, we have been listing Domaine Sauger because it embodies precisely the kind of producer we look for: a family estate with a clear sense of place, a verifiable commitment to responsible viticulture, and wines that deliver consistent quality without pretension. The whites from Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny show a purity and mineral edge that we find genuinely compelling, while the reds offer straightforward, food-friendly drinking at a sensible price. We particularly recommend this estate to those who enjoy exploring the Loire beyond its headline appellations — Cheverny rewards curiosity. At the table, the Sauvignon-based whites are excellent with goat's cheese from the Loire itself, with asparagus, or with freshwater fish; the reds pair well with charcuterie, light game or a simple roast chicken.
