List of products by brand DOMAINE COURBIS
Based at Châteaubourg, on the edge of the Cornas appellation in the Ardèche, Domaine Courbis stands as one of the oldest winemaking lineages in the northern Rhône Valley. The family has tended these hillside vineyards without interruption since 1587 — a continuity that successive vintages have done nothing but confirm.
A granite terroir at the heart of Cornas
The Cornas appellation rests on a remarkably coherent geological foundation: arènes granitiques, the decomposed granite known locally as gore, which drains freely, warms steadily, and transmits to the wine a mineral tension that is entirely its own. Domaine Courbis farms 8 hectares across south-east and east-facing slopes — exposures that maximise sunshine hours while preserving the freshness that distinguishes the finest Cornas from heavier expressions of Syrah further south. The soils are poor by design: vines under stress send roots deep, concentrating flavour and building the structural backbone for which this appellation is rightly celebrated.
Four centuries of unbroken tradition
Few estates anywhere in France can trace a continuous winemaking presence back to 1587. At Domaine Courbis, that history is not merely a date on a label — it represents accumulated knowledge of individual plots, of how each parcel behaves in a warm year versus a cool one, of when to pick and when to wait. Laurent and Dominique Courbis inherited this knowledge from their father, as he did from his, in a chain of transmission that has shaped the estate's unhurried, parcel-focused philosophy. The sole grape variety cultivated across the entire holding is Syrah, the only variety permitted under the Cornas AOC — a constraint that focuses the mind and sharpens the work considerably.
Winemaking: precision over intervention
The brothers' approach in the cellar is guided by the same principles that govern their work in the vineyard: clarity, restraint, and respect for what each parcel has to say. Fermentation and élevage are calibrated to reveal rather than to impose, with the granitic character of the terroir allowed to assert itself through the wine's texture and length rather than being masked by heavy oak or extraction.
The wine range
Domaine Courbis produces exclusively red wines under the Cornas appellation, each reflecting a distinct parcel and its particular expression of granitic Syrah:
- Champelrose — an approachable, earlier-drinking Cornas that nonetheless carries the estate's characteristic mineral precision and depth
- Les Eygats — a parcel-selection of greater concentration and structure, requiring patience in the cellar before it opens fully
- La Sabarotte — the estate's most ambitious cuvée, drawn from old vines on the steepest granite terraces; dense, tightly wound, and built for the long term
Why we have selected Domaine Courbis
We have followed Cornas closely for many years at Halles Quercamps, and Domaine Courbis has consistently been among the most reliable addresses in the appellation. Three things set it apart in our view. First, the parcel-by-parcel work: rather than blending away the differences between plots, Laurent and Dominique Courbis preserve them, giving the drinker a genuine map of the terroir across the range. Second, the consistency of the estate's output across vintages — in a region where the northern Rhône can be unforgiving in difficult years, this matters greatly. Third, the sheer depth of experience that four centuries of unbroken presence on these slopes represents: it is not something that can be replicated quickly. We recommend these wines to confirmed amateurs of the northern Rhône who cellar with intention, and to those who enjoy Syrah at its most structured and mineral. At table, look to slow-roasted lamb, game birds, or a well-aged hard cheese.
