A parcel selection from ancient vines

  • Sourced from vines exceeding seventy years of age, this Cornas expresses the depth and complexity that only mature rootstock can deliver. The age of these plants imparts a concentration rarely found in younger plantings.
  • The élevage here is restrained and purposeful, allowing the wine's natural structure to emerge without excess oak influence. This measured approach preserves the delicate balance between power and refinement.
  • In youth, the wine displays admirable freshness and definition. With time in bottle, it develops a graceful suppleness whilst retaining the bright acidity that characterises the finest northern Rhône expressions.

Breeding
18 months in new oak barrels
On the eye
Deep ruby, almost black at the core, with considerable depth of colour
On the nose
Vanilla and spice notes mingle with aromas of dark berries—blackcurrant and bilberry—creating an inviting and complex bouquet that unfolds gradually in the glass
In the mouth
The palate is frank and direct, with a velvety texture that belies the wine's underlying structure. Fruit-forward on entry, with layers of ripe dark fruit and a lingering finish
M. Francois
This wine pairs excellently with roasted veal kidneys and potato galettes—classic Lyonnaise fare that complements its savoury spice and fruit-driven character. It would equally suit game dishes and mature cheeses. Decant thirty minutes before service to allow the wine to fully express itself.

DOMAINE COURBIS

Planted on the steep Ardèche hillsides of Cornas, Domaine Courbis farms 8 hectares of decomposed granite soils in the northern Rhône Valley, planted exclusively to Syrah. A winemaking family since 1587, brothers Laurent and Dominique Courbis carry forward a tradition passed father to son since the sixteenth century, drawing from individual parcels a series of precisely defined cuvées — Champelrose, Les Eygats, La Sabarotte. At Halles Quercamps, we selected this estate for the rigour of its parcel-by-parcel approach, the clarity with which its granitic terroir speaks through each wine, and its consistency across successive vintages on an appellation we have followed closely for many years. Cornas at its most accomplished: structured, deep reds built for the cellar.
