Established on the Basque heights of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Domaine Brana stands as the founding estate of the Irouléguy appellation as we know it today — the first independent domaine within the AOC, created in 1984 by the Brana family on the foundations of a wine merchant house dating back to 1897.

A family, an appellation, a calling

The story begins in 1897, when the Brana family established themselves in the wine trade in the Basque Country. Nearly a century later, in 1984, Martine and Jean Brana took a decisive step: they planted the first vines of what would become the first independent estate in the AOC Irouléguy. At a time when the appellation was almost entirely in the hands of the local cooperative, this was a bold act of faith in a terroir that had long been overlooked. Their decision would prove transformative — not least in restoring white wine to an appellation that had all but forgotten it.

Terroir: Pyrenean terraces carved from ancient rock

The 16 hectares of Domaine Brana are spread across the communes of Ispoure and Bussunaritz, on narrow terraced slopes facing south and south-west. The soils are a complex mosaic: red triassic sandstone (grès rouges du trias), argilite, limestone, and clay-limestone. These ancient, mineral-rich substrates, combined with the altitude and the influence of both Atlantic and mountain climates, give the wines of Irouléguy their singular character — at once structured and fresh, with a tension that sets them apart from the broader Sud-Ouest. The south-facing terraces maximise ripening while the elevation preserves the natural acidity that defines the estate's style.

Farming and winemaking: a commitment to the land

Domaine Brana holds HVE certification and is currently in organic conversion, reflecting a long-held conviction that the integrity of these exceptional terroirs must be protected. In the winery, the approach is guided by the same respect: allowing the grape varieties — Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, and Petit Courbu — to express the character of the land rather than the hand of the winemaker.

The wines of Domaine Brana

The estate produces red, white, and rosé wines under the AOC Irouléguy appellation:

Reds: built around Tannat and Cabernet Franc, with the structure and depth that Irouléguy's schist-like soils demand — firm tannins, dark fruit, and a mountain freshness that rewards patience in the cellar.
Whites: a rare expression of Irouléguy, led by Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng with Petit Courbu — aromatic, textured, and driven by a lively mineral acidity rooted in the limestone soils.
Rosés: fresh and precise, drawing on the same Basque terroir to deliver wines of real character rather than mere summer drinking.
