Set on 94 hectares of gravelly soils at Bégadan in the northern Médoc, Château la Tour de By produces red, white and rosé wines under the Bordeaux appellation, across two well-exposed gravel ridges facing the Gironde. Founded in 1599 and acquired in 1965 by Marc Pagès, the château is today run by his grandsons Frédéric Le Clerc and Benjamin Richer de Forges. The blend is led by Cabernet-Sauvignon at 60%, supported by Merlot and Petit Verdot, delivering the structure and definition that Médoc gravel terroir does so well. At Halles Quercamps, we selected this château for the reliability of its vintages, its clear terroir expression, and its HVE certification. A dependable reference for lovers of structured Médoc.

Château la Tour de By extends across 94 hectares at Bégadan, in the northern Médoc, on two well-exposed gravel ridges overlooking the Gironde estuary. Founded in 1599 and certified HVE, this is a château that speaks clearly of its terroir — and has done so for centuries.

A name rooted in the landscape

The château takes its name from a lighthouse built in 1825 on the estate's land — a landmark visible from the estuary and a lasting emblem of the property's identity. That lighthouse still stands today, giving the château one of the most recognisable silhouettes in the northern Médoc. The history of the place stretches back to 1599, making it one of the older continuously worked wine estates in the region.

The Pagès family and a half-century of stewardship

In 1965, Marc Pagès and his associates acquired Château la Tour de By and set about restoring and developing the estate with long-term ambition. Today, his grandsons Frédéric Le Clerc and Benjamin Richer de Forges carry that work forward — a generational handover that has preserved the château's character while bringing it firmly into the present. Their approach reflects the kind of quiet, sustained commitment that the Médoc rewards over time.

Terroir and viticulture

The 94 hectares span two distinct soil types: graves garonnaises at Bégadan, and gravel over an argilo-calcaire subsoil at Saint-Christoly-de-Médoc. Both are well-drained and warm, ideal for ripening Cabernet-Sauvignon to its full potential. The vines face the Gironde on gently sloping ridges, benefiting from good sun exposure and the moderating influence of the estuary. The encépagement is classically Médocain: 60% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot — a blend that delivers structure, depth, and the capacity to age. The château holds HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale), reflecting a genuine commitment to responsible viticulture across the estate.

The wine range

Château la Tour de By produces wines across three colours under the Bordeaux appellation:

  • Red — the heart of the estate; Cabernet-Sauvignon-led, structured and age-worthy, with the firm tannins and dark fruit character typical of northern Médoc gravel terroir.
  • White — a less familiar but welcome expression from the estate, offering a fresh, aromatic counterpoint to the reds.
  • Rosé — approachable and food-friendly, rounding out a range that speaks to different occasions and seasons.

Why we have selected Château la Tour de By

At Halles Quercamps, we have been listing Château la Tour de By because it delivers something increasingly rare in Bordeaux: vintage consistency at a sensible price point, without compromising on terroir expression. The combination of old-established gravel soils, a classically structured blend, and a family ownership with genuine long-term vision produces wines that reward patience in the cellar. We also value the château's HVE certification as a mark of responsible stewardship — not a marketing label, but a reflection of how the vines are actually managed. This is a château we recommend to confirmed Bordeaux enthusiasts who want a dependable Médoc for laying down, as well as to those building a cellar with an eye on value and longevity. At the table, the reds pair particularly well with roast lamb, aged hard cheeses, and classic French braised dishes.
