A family estate with deep roots in Ampuis

Jean-Michel Gerin established the domaine in 1983, drawing on a winemaking heritage passed down through six generations of an Ampuis family. He took full charge of the estate in 1987, steadily building its reputation on the strength of its terroir and the precision of its viticulture. Today, Michaël and Alexis Gerin carry the estate forward, bringing their own rigour and sensitivity to wines that remain firmly anchored in the identity of Côte-Rôtie. This continuity — from father to sons, from one vintage to the next — is not mere tradition for its own sake; it is the accumulated knowledge of what these particular slopes demand and what they are capable of giving.

Terroir: steep slopes, ancient soils

The estate covers 20 hectares across the celebrated coteaux of Côte-Rôtie, with south-east-facing slopes inclined at between 40 and 60 per cent. These are not gentle gradients: every operation in the vineyard, from pruning to harvest, is carried out by hand. The soils vary across the holdings — micaschist, red schist and loess — each lending its own character to the wines. The micaschist parcels, in particular, contribute the mineral tension and aromatic lift that define the finest expressions of the appellation. Syrah is the dominant variety, as the appellation demands, with small plantings of Viognier used in the production of both the estate's white wines and, in the classic northern Rhône tradition, co-fermented with Syrah in certain red cuvées.

Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin received full organic certification (Agriculture Biologique) from the 2023 vintage, alongside HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification. These are not recent conversions of convenience: the estate's approach to the vineyard has long prioritised soil health, biodiversity and the reduction of chemical inputs. Certification formalises what has been a sustained direction of travel.
