Château Carbonnieux stands on one of the finest gravel ridges in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, at Léognan in the Gironde. Classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves in both red and white since 1959, it is among the very few Bordeaux châteaux to hold this double distinction.

Eight centuries of unbroken viticulture

The origins of Château Carbonnieux reach back to 1234, when Benedictine monks from the Abbaye Sainte-Croix in Bordeaux began cultivating the vine on this elevated gravel outcrop. Over the following centuries, the estate changed hands several times before falling into neglect during the upheavals of the Revolution. It was not until 1956 that the Perrin family — today represented by Éric, Christine and Philibert Perrin — acquired the property and undertook a thorough restoration of both the vineyards and the cellars. Under their stewardship, Château Carbonnieux has become one of the most reliable addresses in the appellation, combining historical depth with a consistently modern approach to quality.

Terroir: Günzian gravels at the appellation's highest point

The 100-hectare vineyard sits on a croupe de graves günziennes — ancient Günzian-era gravel deposits — at an altitude of 50 metres, the highest point in the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Beneath the gravel surface lies a subsoil of clay, with pockets of sand and limestone, providing both excellent drainage and a natural reserve of moisture during dry summers. This combination of well-drained topsoil and moisture-retaining subsoil is central to the finesse that characterises wines from this site. The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot for the reds, and to Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon for the whites — a classic Pessac-Léognan palette deployed across a single, coherent terroir.

Certification and approach in the vineyard

Château Carbonnieux holds HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale), reflecting a sustained commitment to reducing chemical inputs and preserving biodiversity across the estate. While the château does not pursue organic or biodynamic certification, HVE represents a meaningful step towards more responsible viticulture within a large-scale Bordeaux property. In the winery, the approach favours precision over intervention, with vinification tailored to each grape variety and each vintage.

The wines of Château Carbonnieux

The château produces two colours under the Pessac-Léognan appellation, each with its own distinct character:

Château Carbonnieux Blanc — Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon; a wine of notable mineral precision and freshness, with the structure to develop beautifully over five to fifteen years in the cellar.
Château Carbonnieux Rouge — Cabernet Sauvignon-led with Merlot and Cabernet Franc; a structured, composed red with the gravelly tension characteristic of Léognan, built for medium to long ageing.
