List of products by brand DOMAINE DE PANISSE
Domaine de Panisse represents a demanding vision of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: 13 hectares farmed in organic and biodynamic agriculture by the Vacheron family, who took over this historically significant estate in April 2020 to begin an ambitious new chapter in the southern Rhône Valley.
A Provençal manor with roots in 1472
The estate takes its name from the seigneur Dominique de Panisse, whose Provençal manor house dates to 1472 — one of the oldest documented properties in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Situated in the commune of Courthézon, in the Vaucluse, the estate sits within a natural amphitheatre formed by gentle hillsides that wrap around the vineyards, offering a sheltered and well-exposed growing environment typical of the finest sites in the southern Rhône Valley.
The Vacheron family: a considered takeover
The acquisition of Domaine de Panisse in April 2020 by the famille Vacheron was not a speculative purchase. Already at the helm of Clos du Caillou — one of the most respected estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape — the family brought with them a clear philosophy: respect for the land, patient viticulture and an uncompromising approach to quality. The transition to organic and biodynamic farming was initiated immediately upon takeover, a commitment that speaks to the seriousness of their intentions. The estate has already attracted the attention of the Revue du Vin de France, earning a Coup de Cœur — a recognition that rarely comes to estates still in conversion.
Terroir and grape varieties
The 13 hectares of Domaine de Panisse encompass a diversity of soils characteristic of the broader Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation: quartzite galets roulés (the iconic rounded stones that store daytime heat and release it slowly at night), sand, silt and clay-limestone. This mosaic of soil types, combined with the natural amphitheatre exposure, allows each grape variety to express itself on its most suitable terroir. The estate is planted to the classic southern Rhône palette: Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault — varieties that, in the right hands, produce reds of considerable depth, structure and aromatic complexity.
The wine range at Domaine de Panisse
Domaine de Panisse produces exclusively red wines under the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The range reflects the estate's commitment to terroir-driven winemaking under organic and biodynamic certification:
- Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge — structured, expressive reds built on Grenache and complementary southern Rhône varieties, farmed biodynamically on the estate's diverse soils at Courthézon.
Why we have selected Domaine de Panisse
We first took notice of Domaine de Panisse because of who was behind it. The Vacheron family's track record at Clos du Caillou gave us every confidence that their approach to this historic estate would be serious and long-term. The immediate commitment to biodynamic farming — rather than a gradual, commercially convenient transition — confirmed that view. The reds already show the kind of personality and precision that Châteauneuf-du-Pape can achieve when yields are controlled and the land is genuinely respected. We list this estate for customers who appreciate wines with a clear sense of place: those building a cellar with an eye on the next ten to fifteen years, or seeking a Châteauneuf-du-Pape that goes beyond the appellation's more commercial expressions. At the table, these wines pair beautifully with slow-roasted lamb, game birds or aged hard cheeses.
