Syrah, Grenache

From century-old vines, a wine of remarkable finesse

  • This wine distinguishes itself through its graceful balance and vibrant freshness. The grenache and syrah vines occupy terroirs comparable to those of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, yet le Mazet achieves its own distinctive character through meticulous winemaking.
  • An ideal companion to roasted guinea fowl, lamb cutlets grilled over vine cuttings, or the aromatic warmth of an aubergine tajine. Its supple texture and spiced fruit notes complement Mediterranean and North African cuisine with ease.
  • Under the stewardship of Jean-Paul Daumen of Vieille Julienne, this Côtes du Rhône has gained considerable precision and refinement. It represents what connoisseurs recognise as a 'Baby Châteauneuf'—haute couture winemaking applied to the appellation.

Breeding
Ageing in concrete vats (primarily) to preserve the fruit's brightness. No new oak to avoid masking the finesse of the Grenache.
On the eye
Violet-tinged ruby with luminous reflections and a soft, velvety appearance
On the nose
Aromas of dark berries and ripe strawberry mingle with subtle herbal and spiced notes, suggesting the wine's balanced complexity
In the mouth
Suave and unctuous on the palate, with a refined texture and welcome freshness that carries through to a clean, lingering finish
M. Francois
Le Mazet exemplifies contemporary Côtes du Rhône at its finest—a wine that prioritises mouthfeel and genuine drinking pleasure over ostentation. The precision gained under Daumen's direction is evident throughout. Its appeal lies not in rarity but in the remarkable harmony between quality, value, and emotional satisfaction. A benchmark for the appellation.

DOMAINE DE PANISSE

Spread across 13 hectares at Courthézon, in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, Domaine de Panisse takes its name from a Provençal manor house dating to 1472. Acquired in April 2020 by the Vacheron family — already well regarded at Clos du Caillou — the estate is now farmed under full organic and biodynamic certification, across a mosaic of quartzite galets roulés, sand and clay-limestone soils planted to Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this estate for the rigour of its biodynamic conversion, the character of its reds and the coherence of a project carried by a family whose standards we know well. A Châteauneuf-du-Pape to follow closely.
