List of products by brand CHAMPAGNE BILLECART-SALMON
Founded in 1818 in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, in the Marne, Billecart-Salmon stands among the rare great Champagne Houses to have remained under family control across more than two centuries. Since 2019, the House has been led by Mathieu Roland-Billecart, the seventh generation of the founding family.
A family House rooted in the great Champagne terroirs
Billecart-Salmon draws on a 100-hectare estate vineyard spread across the three principal zones of the Champagne appellation: the Côte des Blancs, the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne. This breadth of terroir — limestone and clay-limestone soils, each with its own exposure and microclimate — gives the House the raw material to craft blends of genuine complexity and consistency. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier are all cultivated here, providing the full palette of Champagne's three principal varieties.
Over two centuries of history
The House was established by Nicolas-François Billecart and his wife Élisabeth Salmon at a time when Champagne was already establishing its reputation across Europe. What followed was a remarkable continuity: seven generations of the same family, each transmitting not only the vineyards but a clear and consistent house style — one that has always favoured elegance and precision over power and weight. The shareholding structure today sees the Roland-Billecart family retain majority control, with the Frey group holding a 45% minority stake, a balance that has preserved the House's independence of vision. The most celebrated expression of that vision came in 1999, when the cuvée NFB 1959 was named Champagne of the Millennium — a distinction that speaks to the House's capacity for long ageing and its commitment to the finest base wines.
HVE certification and a commitment to responsible viticulture
Billecart-Salmon holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification across its vineyard holdings — a meaningful commitment to reducing chemical inputs, preserving biodiversity and managing water responsibly. For a House of this scale, operating 100 hectares in one of France's most intensively farmed wine regions, this certification reflects a genuine and sustained effort rather than a marketing gesture. It is a dimension we consider carefully when building our selection at Halles Quercamps.
The wine range
- Blanc (non-vintage and vintage) — Chardonnay-led blends and Pinot Noir-driven cuvées offering freshness, structure and the classic Champagne profile of the House.
- Rosé — Among the most celebrated in the appellation; the Blanc de Blancs de Noirs rosé is a reference point for the style, combining delicacy of colour with depth of flavour.
- Prestige and vintage cuvées — Including the iconic NFB range, produced only in the finest years and built for extended cellaring.
Why we have selected Billecart-Salmon
At Halles Quercamps, we have listed Billecart-Salmon because it represents something increasingly rare in Champagne: a House of genuine stature that has not sacrificed its identity to volume or to corporate ownership. The combination of a 100-hectare estate vineyard, HVE certification, seven generations of family stewardship and a track record stretching back to 1818 provides a foundation of trust that few Houses can match.
The style — precise, fine-boned, built on the quality of the base wines rather than dosage — appeals particularly to those who approach Champagne as a serious wine rather than simply a celebratory drink. We recommend the range to customers who enjoy Champagne at the table: with oysters or scallops for the Blanc de Blancs expressions, with roasted poultry or aged hard cheeses for the more Pinot Noir-driven cuvées. For those building a cellar, the vintage and prestige cuvées reward patience and are among the most cellar-worthy wines the appellation produces.
