List of products by brand DOMAINE ANTOINE SANZAY
Domaine Antoine Sanzay is one of the benchmark addresses in Saumur-Champigny, farmed with quiet rigour across 11 hectares of tuffeau and argilo-calcaire soils in Varrains, Maine-et-Loire.
Seven generations in Varrains — and an independent vision
The Sanzay family has been rooted in Varrains for seven generations. For much of that history, the harvest went to the local cooperative. The break came in 1999, when Antoine Sanzay chose to vinify his own fruit independently. That step led to the formal founding of the estate in 2013.
By then, Antoine had spent years studying his terroirs closely. When he established Domaine Antoine Sanzay as an independent structure, his direction was clear: low-intervention viticulture, respect for the soil, and wines that reflect their place.
Tuffeau, argilo-calcaire, and the slopes of Les Poyeux
The 11 hectares sit on the varied soils that make Saumur-Champigny so compelling for Cabernet Franc. Tuffeau gives wines their characteristic tension and mineral lift, while argilo-calcaire and sandy-calcareous parcels add textural nuance and aromatic complexity.
Among these holdings, the 4 hectares on lieu-dit Les Poyeux stand apart. Facing south and south-west above Varrains, this site benefits from excellent sun exposure and well-drained tuffeau subsoil, allowing Cabernet Franc to ripen fully while retaining freshness and structure. Yields are held to 45 hl/ha, concentrating flavour without sacrificing elegance.
Organic farming — certified since 2014
The estate has held organic certification (Agriculture Biologique) since 2014. No synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fertilisers are used; soils are maintained through cover crops and careful tillage. In the Loire's humid Atlantic climate, sustained organic viticulture is a genuine challenge, making the estate's certification all the more meaningful.
The wine range
Across 11 hectares, the estate produces wines in four styles, with Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc as the twin pillars:
- Saumur-Champigny rouge — Cabernet Franc from tuffeau and argilo-calcaire, including the flagship Les Poyeux; structured, mineral, age-worthy
- Saumur blanc — Chenin Blanc with chalky freshness and honeyed tension
- Saumur rosé — a dry, precise expression of Cabernet Franc
- Saumur effervescent — traditional-method sparkling wines from Loire Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc
Why we selected Domaine Antoine Sanzay
At Halles Quercamps, we look for estates where the winemaker's choices are coherent from vine to bottle. Antoine's decision to leave the cooperative, build his own estate, and pursue organic certification within a year of founding it speaks to a producer with clear convictions. The reds from Les Poyeux show mineral precision and structural integrity that reward cellaring. We recommend them to lovers of Loire reds who appreciate terroir-driven Cabernet Franc — wines that pair naturally with roast lamb, game birds, or aged hard cheese.
