List of products by brand CHATEAU LANGOA BARTON

Set on the gravel slopes of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle overlooking the Gironde, Château Langoa Barton is one of the very few 3rd Grands Crus Classés of 1855 still held by the family that owned it at the time of classification. Acquired in 1821 by Hugh Barton, the château works 20 hectares of shallow graves to produce red wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the consistency of its Saint-Julien style — precise, full-bodied and quietly elegant — and for the remarkable continuity of a family now in its tenth generation with Lilian Barton Sartorius. A benchmark of the appellation, and one we are proud to list.

Château Langoa Barton stands among the great names of Saint-Julien: a 3rd Grand Cru Classé of 1855, it has been in the Barton family since 1821, making it one of the longest-held classified growths in the entire Médoc — a record of continuity that is as rare as it is remarkable.

Two centuries in the same family

It was in 1821 that Hugh Barton, an Irish-born négociant long established in Bordeaux, purchased Château Langoa Barton. Two centuries on, the château remains in the hands of his direct descendants. Lilian Barton Sartorius and her children represent the tenth generation of the family to steward this estate — a lineage that has guided Langoa Barton through the 1855 Classification, two world wars, and the sweeping changes of modern viticulture without ever passing out of family ownership. In an appellation where classified growths have frequently changed hands, this continuity is not merely a point of pride: it shapes the culture of the château, its attachment to a particular style, and its long-term approach to the land.

Terroir: graves on the Gironde slopes

The 20-hectare vineyard occupies the coteaux of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, with a north-north-westerly orientation facing the Gironde. The soils are characteristically Médocain: shallow graves — the well-drained gravel beds that force the vine's roots deep in search of water and nutrients — overlying a clay subsoil. Sandy gravels are reserved for the Merlot parcels, providing slightly more moisture retention to suit the variety. This combination of drainage, depth and gentle slope produces the conditions in which Cabernet Sauvignon thrives: concentrated, slow-ripening fruit with the structural backbone that defines Saint-Julien at its best. The grape mix — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot — is the classic Médoc palette, assembled here with the assurance of long experience on this specific terroir.

Winemaking: precision in the Médoc tradition

The winemaking at Château Langoa Barton is guided by a conviction that the terroir and the vintage should speak clearly, without over-intervention. Élevage in French oak barrels allows the wine to develop structure and complexity while preserving the fine, precise fruit that is the hallmark of Saint-Julien. The château produces exclusively red wines, and the style across vintages is notably consistent: firm but not austere, with the characteristic cassis and cedar of the appellation and a finish that rewards patience in the cellar.

The wines of Château Langoa Barton

  • Château Langoa Barton (Grand Vin) — the 3rd Grand Cru Classé 1855, a structured, cellar-worthy Saint-Julien red built on Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Expressive in youth, it rewards ageing of ten years or more in good vintages.
  • Lady Langoa — the second wine of the château, offering the Langoa Barton character in a more approachable register, with the same Saint-Julien appellation and the same gravel-grown fruit, ready to drink somewhat earlier.

Why we have selected Château Langoa Barton

We list Château Langoa Barton because it represents something increasingly rare in the Médoc: a classified growth with an unbroken family history, a clear and consistent house style, and a price point that remains honest for its classification. The tenth generation of the Barton family brings the same rigour and the same attachment to Saint-Julien that Hugh Barton established two centuries ago.

We recommend these wines to enthusiasts who appreciate the classic Médoc structure — the interplay of Cabernet Sauvignon, fine tannins and restrained oak — and who buy with the cellar in mind. Langoa Barton is equally at home alongside a rack of lamb or a well-aged côte de bœuf, and makes a considered, lasting gift for any serious wine lover.
