A history rooted in the 1855 Classification

The origins of Château la Lagune reach back to 1587, making it one of the oldest estates in the Médoc. Its place in the celebrated 1855 Classification as a 3rd Grand Cru Classé confirmed what generations of growers had long understood: that the gravel soils of Ludon-Médoc were capable of producing wines of genuine distinction. In 2000, the Frey family acquired the château, with Caroline Frey taking the helm and setting a new course — one defined by rigour, environmental responsibility, and a determination to express the terroir without compromise. Under her stewardship, the estate has undergone a transformation that is as much philosophical as it is agricultural.

Terroir: light graves on a north-south ridge

The vineyard extends across 80 hectares of a single, unbroken block at Ludon-Médoc, in the southern reaches of the Haut-Médoc appellation in Gironde. The soils are composed of light graves — a complex mosaic of pink, yellow and white quartz, calcite, agates and silica — laid over a north-south oriented gravel ridge. This well-draining, warm subsoil is ideally suited to the three grape varieties cultivated here: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The gravel retains heat through the day and releases it gently at night, encouraging steady, even ripening and preserving the natural acidity that gives Haut-Médoc its characteristic structure and ageing potential.
