When the Saint-Émilion classification was formally introduced in 1955, Cheval Blanc was placed immediately at its summit — among the very first to receive Premier Grand Cru Classé A status, a distinction it shared with only a handful of properties. In 1998, the château passed into the ownership of Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frère, who oversaw a period of significant investment without altering the fundamental character that had made the estate's reputation. In 2022, Château Cheval Blanc chose to withdraw voluntarily from the Saint-Émilion classification — a move widely interpreted not as a retreat, but as a statement of independence from a system it had long outgrown.

Terroir and grape varieties
