List of products by brand CHATEAU BRANAIRE-DUCRU

Situated in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle on Bordeaux's Left Bank, Château Branaire-Ducru covers 60 hectares of gravelly, siliceous soils and has held 4th Grand Cru Classé status since 1855. Founded in 1680 by Jean-Baptiste Braneyre, the château was acquired in 1988 by Patrick Maroteaux, who undertook a thorough modernisation of the estate; his son François-Xavier has led the property since 2017, maintaining a rigorous approach to quality across the Saint-Julien appellation. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the precision of its Cabernet Sauvignon-led blends, the consistency it delivers across vintages, and the integrity of a gravel terroir cultivated with real discipline. A benchmark Saint-Julien, faithful to the appellation's classical elegance.

Château Branaire-Ducru stands as one of the most dependable addresses in the Saint-Julien appellation — a 4th Grand Cru Classé whose reputation, earned in 1855, rests on more than three centuries of continuous work on some of the Médoc's finest quaternary gravel soils.

A château rooted in the history of Saint-Julien

Founded in 1680 by Jean-Baptiste Braneyre, Château Branaire-Ducru is among the oldest properties in the commune of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, in the Gironde. It was classified as a 4th Grand Cru Classé in the landmark 1855 classification — a distinction that reflected the quality of its terroir as much as the standing of its wines. The château passed through several hands over the centuries before Patrick Maroteaux acquired it in 1988, embarking on a comprehensive programme of modernisation that touched both the vineyard and the cellars. His son, François-Xavier Maroteaux, took over the direction in 2017 and has continued to raise the bar, bringing a precise, thoughtful approach to every aspect of production. Today, Château Branaire-Ducru is widely regarded as one of the most reliable and characterful estates in Saint-Julien.

Terroir: gravel, silica and a southern aspect

The 60-hectare vineyard lies on the southern part of the Saint-Julien appellation, oriented on an east-west axis that favours even ripening. The soils are composed of quaternary gravelly alluvials — sandy and siliceous graves that drain freely, warm quickly in spring, and encourage the vine to root deeply in search of water and minerals. This is classic Médoc terroir, and it is ideally suited to the grape varieties planted here: Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend, supported by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and a measure of Cabernet Franc. The result is a wine of structure and finesse, with the aromatic precision and age-worthiness that define the finest expressions of the Saint-Julien appellation.

Viticulture and certification

Château Branaire-Ducru holds HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale), reflecting a genuine commitment to responsible viticulture across its 60 hectares. The approach in the vineyard prioritises soil health, biodiversity, and the reduction of chemical inputs — a direction that has gathered pace under François-Xavier Maroteaux's stewardship. In the cellar, the winemaking is precise and unhurried, with élevage conducted with the patience that a classified Bordeaux of this standing demands.

The wines of Château Branaire-Ducru

The château produces red wines exclusively under the Saint-Julien appellation. The range includes:

  • Château Branaire-Ducru — the Grand Vin, a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend of structure, depth, and classical Saint-Julien elegance, built for the cellar.
  • Duluc de Branaire-Ducru — the second wine, offering earlier accessibility while retaining the precision and character of the estate's terroir.

Both wines are produced entirely from the estate's own vineyards in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, with no fruit sourced externally.

Why we have selected Château Branaire-Ducru

At Halles Quercamps, we have listed Château Branaire-Ducru because it represents something increasingly valuable in classified Bordeaux: genuine consistency. Vintage after vintage, this château delivers wines that are true to their appellation — structured, aromatic, and built to age gracefully. The Maroteaux family's long-term investment in both vineyard and cellar is evident in every bottle, and the HVE certification speaks to an environmental seriousness we respect. We recommend these wines to confirmed amateurs of the Médoc who appreciate classical Saint-Julien character — the firm but polished tannins, the cedar and dark fruit, the measured elegance. At the table, the Grand Vin pairs beautifully with rack of lamb, roast grouse, or a well-aged hard cheese. The second wine, Duluc, is an excellent companion to slow-cooked beef or duck confit.
