List of products by brand DOMAINE DE L'ECU

Based at Le Landreau in Loire-Atlantique, Domaine de l'Ecu farms 24 hectares of Muscadet under full Demeter-certified biodynamic principles. Founded in 1972 by Guy Bossard — one of the appellation's earliest organic pioneers — the estate was taken over in 2010 by Fred Niger, who has since pushed the approach further still: amphora vinification and parcel-specific cuvées declinated by soil type, across Gneiss, Orthogneiss, and Granite. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this estate for the rigour of its viticulture, the geological clarity of its terroirs, and the character of its Melon de Bourgogne whites. For those seeking a Muscadet of genuine substance, this is a serious address.

Domaine de l'Ecu is among the most rigorous estates in the Muscadet appellation. Based at Le Landreau in Loire-Atlantique, it farms 24 hectares under certified organic and biodynamic principles, with geological diversity giving each cuvée a distinct, legible identity.

A pioneering estate and a successful handover

Guy Bossard founded the domaine in 1972, converting early to organic farming and establishing it as one of Muscadet's first estates to work without synthetic inputs. In 2010, Fred Niger took over, deepening the commitment with full biodynamic farming and Demeter certification — the most stringent standard in biodynamics. He also introduced amphora vinification for certain cuvées, preserving aromatic freshness and textural detail without oak.

Terroir at the heart of everything: Gneiss, Orthogneiss, Granite

Rather than blending across parcels, Fred Niger vinifies separately by soil type, producing distinct cuvées from Gneiss, Orthogneiss, and Granite — all part of the Armorican Massif. Each substrate imparts a different mineral signature to Melon de Bourgogne: Gneiss brings tension and salinity; Orthogneiss a finer, more delicate minerality; Granite a broader, more textured expression. Terroir-driven winemaking in the most literal sense.

Certifications and farming philosophy

The estate holds organic, biodynamic, and Demeter certification. No synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fertilisers are used. Biodynamic preparations are applied across all 24 hectares, and the vineyard calendar follows lunar rhythms. In the cellar: native yeasts, no fining, minimal sulphur. The amphora programme allows certain wines to develop slowly, producing bottles of notable complexity for the appellation.

The wine range

White wines on Melon de Bourgogne form the core, with complementary whites and reds completing the range.

  • White wines (Melon de Bourgogne) — soil-specific cuvées (Gneiss, Orthogneiss, Granite) and amphora selections; dry, mineral, built for the table.
  • White wines (Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc) — complementary cuvées reflecting the Loire's white wine tradition, same low-intervention approach.
  • Red wines (Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir) — smaller volumes, Loire freshness and fine tannin structure.

Why we have selected Domaine de l'Ecu

We have listed Domaine de l'Ecu because it represents something genuinely rare in Muscadet: wines that reward attention. Separate vinification by soil type gives the range a clarity we find compelling. Niger's Demeter-certified farming is not a marketing position — it is visible in the vineyard and perceptible in the glass.

We recommend these wines to confirmed amateurs ready to discover what Muscadet can achieve when yields are controlled and the cellar stays out of the way. The Melon de Bourgogne cuvées are outstanding with oysters, grilled sea bass, or a plateau de fruits de mer, yet have the structure for more complex fish preparations and light poultry.
