A new chapter rooted in Saumur's tuffeau soils

Domaine des Closiers was taken over in 2019 by Anatole de la Brosse, who arrived not as a born-and-bred vigneron but as a former consultant with a precise understanding of what great Loire wine demands. From the outset, he sought counsel from two figures of considerable standing in the region: Nady Foucault of the legendary Clos Rougeard, and Michel Chevré. Their influence is felt in the estate's unhurried, methodical approach — a refusal to cut corners, and a respect for the land that goes well beyond compliance.

24 hectares of exceptional terroir in Parnay

The estate's 24 hectares spread across the hillside slopes of Parnay, one of the most storied communes of the Saumur appellation. The soils here are a blend of argilo-calcaire and tuffeau calcaire — the soft, pale limestone that defines the character of the middle Loire. Tuffeau retains moisture through dry summers, drains freely in wet seasons, and imparts a mineral tension to the wines that is quite unlike anything produced on heavier soils. The hillside coteaux exposure ensures good ripening without sacrificing freshness, a balance that is particularly valuable for both Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc.

Organic farming and a commitment to certification

HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification was obtained as early as 2017 — before the change of ownership — and Anatole de la Brosse pursued the full conversion to Agriculture Biologique, achieving Ecocert certification in 2023. In the vineyard, this means no synthetic herbicides or pesticides, careful soil management, and an attention to vine health that supports the natural expression of the terroir.
