Eight centuries of history at Saint-Estèphe

Few properties in Bordeaux can trace their origins as far back as Château Calon Ségur. The estate was established in 1147, making it one of the oldest continuously cultivated vineyards in the Médoc. Its name carries the memory of the Marquis de Ségur, the eighteenth-century owner who famously declared that his heart lay at Calon, even as he also held Lafite and Latour — a sentiment immortalised on every bottle. The château was classified as a 3rd Grand Cru Classé in the landmark 1855 classification, a rank it has held without interruption. Following the death of Denise Capbern-Gasqueton, who had guided the property for decades, Suravenir Assurances — a subsidiary of Crédit Mutuel Arkéa — acquired the château in 2012. Rather than altering its identity, the new ownership invested substantially in both vineyard and cellar, reinforcing the estate's long-term ambitions and environmental commitments.

A terroir at the northern frontier of the Médoc

The vineyard extends across 55 hectares within the Saint-Estèphe appellation, in the Gironde. The soils are characteristically Médocain at the surface — gravel over a clay subsoil that retains moisture through dry summers and moderates the vigour of the vines. The exposures favour the gravelly ridges and gentle north-facing slopes that descend towards the Gironde estuary, providing excellent drainage and a tempering maritime influence.
