A founding history in Burgundy

William Ponsot established the estate in 1872, in the difficult years following the Franco-Prussian War — a period that saw many Burgundian properties change hands or disappear altogether. His decision to build here, in Morey-Saint-Denis, proved far-sighted. By 1921, the estate had become one of the earliest in the Côte-d'Or to bottle its wines at the property rather than selling in barrel to négociants, a practice that was then far from standard. This commitment to controlling the wine from vine to bottle gave Domaine Ponsot an early advantage in quality and traceability, and helped establish its reputation on export markets — including the United States — well before such ambitions were commonplace in Burgundy.

Terroir and viticulture in Morey-Saint-Denis

The estate's 7 hectares are planted across the coteaux and east-facing slopes of Morey-Saint-Denis, with some parcels reaching up towards the forest edge at the top of the hillside. The soils here are varied and geologically rich: lean argilo-calcaire, layered limestone scree (grèzes litées), white oolite, and Dijon-Corton limestone all feature across the holdings.
