List of products by brand DOMAINE PATRICK BAUDOUIN

Established at Chaudefonds-sur-Layon in Maine-et-Loire, Domaine Patrick Baudouin farms 13 hectares of hillside vineyards on schist, sandstone and volcanic rock from the Massif armoricain, under the Loire appellation. Founded in 1920 by Maria and Louis Juby, the estate was taken over in 1990 by Patrick Baudouin, who converted to organic farming and deliberately restrained yields of 25 to 30 hl/ha to draw the fullest mineral expression from the terroir. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this estate for the rigour of its viticulture, the precision of its Chenin blancs, and the rare distinction of being the only Loire wine included in Michel Chasseuil's celebrated collection of 100 Trésors Millésimés. A Loire reference we are proud to list.

Domaine Patrick Baudouin stands among the most demanding estates in the Loire Valley, rooted in the hillside vineyards of Chaudefonds-sur-Layon, where schist and volcanic rock from the Massif armoricain lend a striking mineral character to every vintage.

A family estate shaped by a century of history

The story begins in 1920, when Maria and Louis Juby established the property on these steep coteaux in Maine-et-Loire. For several decades the estate passed quietly through the family until 1990, when Patrick Baudouin took the reins and set the domain on an altogether more ambitious course. His arrival marked a decisive turning point: a commitment to organic farming, a sharper focus on terroir expression, and a willingness to accept very low yields — between 25 and 30 hl/ha — that most producers in the region would consider commercially uncomfortable. That discipline, sustained over more than three decades, is precisely what gives the wines of Domaine Patrick Baudouin their character and their longevity.

Terroir: schist, sandstone and volcanic soils

The estate's 13 hectares of hillside vineyards sit on a mosaic of schistes, sandstone and volcanic formations belonging to the ancient Massif armoricain — some of the oldest geological substrates in western France. These well-drained, heat-retaining soils are ideally suited to Chenin blanc, the great white grape of the Loire, which here develops a tension between richness and acidity that is the hallmark of the appellation. Cabernet franc and Cabernet sauvignon complete the encépagement, producing reds of genuine structure and freshness from the same hillside exposures.

Organic certification and winemaking philosophy

Domaine Patrick Baudouin holds organic certification (Agriculture biologique). In the vineyard, this translates into careful soil management, the rejection of synthetic inputs, and a respect for the natural balance of the vine. In the cellar, the approach is equally attentive: élevage is conducted with minimal intervention, allowing the terroir and the vintage to speak clearly in the finished wine. The result is a range of wines that reward patience in the cellar as much as pleasure at the table.

The wine range

Domaine Patrick Baudouin produces wines in two colours across the Loire appellation:

  • White wines — Chenin blanc, ranging from dry to late-harvest styles; mineral, precise, built for ageing.
  • Red wines — Cabernet franc and Cabernet sauvignon; structured, fresh, expressive of the volcanic and schistous terroir.

The estate holds a singular distinction: it is the only Loire wine represented in Michel Chasseuil's celebrated collection of 100 Trésors Millésimés — a private collection widely regarded as one of the most discerning in France.

Why we have selected Domaine Patrick Baudouin

At Halles Quercamps, we have been listing Domaine Patrick Baudouin because it represents everything we look for in a Loire estate: a clear sense of place, an uncompromising approach to viticulture, and wines that genuinely improve with time in the cellar. The organic conversion, the restrained yields, and the geological complexity of the terroir combine to produce Chenin blancs of real depth and distinction — wines that stand apart from the broader Loire offer. We recommend this estate particularly to lovers of mineral white wines who enjoy following a producer across vintages, and to those building a cellar with an eye on the medium to long term. At table, the whites pair beautifully with freshwater fish, shellfish, and aged goat's cheeses from the Loire itself; the reds are well suited to roast poultry and charcuterie.
