List of products by brand CHATEAU LA NERTHE
Château la Nerthe stands as one of the most historically significant estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape: documented since 1560, a pioneer of estate bottling as early as 1776, and the first producer in the appellation to convert to certified organic farming in 1998. Across 92 hectares in Vaucluse, it combines rare historical depth with rigorous contemporary viticulture.
One of the founding estates of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation
Very few wine properties in France can point to a continuous, documented presence since the sixteenth century. Château la Nerthe is one of them. Attested from 1560, it predates the formal creation of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation by several centuries and has played a defining role in shaping its identity. The estate was also a pioneer of estate bottling: as early as 1776, wines were bottled on site — an extraordinary step at a time when most production was sold in bulk to négociants. This early commitment to quality at source, and to direct export, established a tradition of independence and precision that the Richard family has upheld since acquiring the property in 1985.
Terroir: a mosaic of soils across 92 hectares
The estate's 92 hectares encompass a genuinely varied mosaic of soils, each contributing distinct character to the final blends. Around the château itself, sandy and marly soils give way to clay-limestone, with the famous galets roulés — the large, heat-retaining rounded stones so closely associated with Châteauneuf-du-Pape — present in abundance. On the celebrated plateau de La Crau, clay beneath a deep layer of galets roulés produces wines of particular concentration and aromatic complexity. Slopes and terraces face predominantly south, ensuring excellent ripening across the estate's full range of varieties: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault for the reds; Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc for the whites.
Organic certification: a pioneer since 1998
When the Richard family converted Château la Nerthe to organic farming in the late 1990s, it was a bold decision in an appellation not yet accustomed to such commitments. The estate received its Ecocert organic certification in 1998 — the first in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to do so. This was not a marketing gesture but a long-term agronomic choice, aimed at preserving the vitality of the soils and expressing the terroir with the greatest possible honesty. Today, the certification remains a cornerstone of the estate's identity.
The wines: reds and whites of real ambition
- Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge — Grenache-led blends drawing on the full mosaic of soils; generous, structured, with the garrigue character and ageing potential typical of the finest southern Rhône reds.
- Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc — Roussanne and Clairette at their most expressive; aromatic, textured whites with the weight and length to reward cellaring.
Why we have selected Château la Nerthe
At Halles Quercamps, we look for estates that speak clearly of where they come from — and Château la Nerthe does precisely that, vintage after vintage. Three things drew us to this estate in particular. First, the consistency of its organic commitment: certified since 1998, the farming here is not a recent trend but a deeply held conviction, and it shows in the vitality of the wines. Second, the precision of the blending: with eight grape varieties across a complex mosaic of soils, the winemaking team demonstrates real skill in translating terroir into coherent, expressive wines. Third, the historical legitimacy of a property documented since 1560, which gives every bottle a sense of place and continuity that few estates can match. We recommend these wines to confirmed enthusiasts of the Vallée du Rhône who value depth over flamboyance, and to those building a cellar with an eye on the medium to long term. At the table, the reds are superb alongside slow-roasted lamb with herbs de Provence, or a well-aged Comté; the whites are a natural partner for grilled sea bass or a rich fish terrine.
