From Benedictine origins to the Ballande era

The story of this château begins in 1444, when Benedictine monks first cultivated vines on these gravelly soils — laying the foundations of what would become one of Margaux's most recognised estates. Centuries later, in 1951, the property was acquired by Alexis Lichine, the Russian-born American wine writer and merchant who earned the sobriquet 'Pope of Wine' for his tireless promotion of Bordeaux to English-speaking audiences. Lichine transformed the château into a model of openness and quality, welcoming visitors at a time when most classified growths kept their gates firmly shut. In 1999, Groupe Ballande took ownership, bringing fresh investment and a long-term commitment to the estate's standards. The transition proved smooth: the house style — precise, Cabernet-driven, unmistakably Margaux — has been maintained and refined under the new stewardship.

Terroir: Günz gravels and quaternary terraces

The 78-hectare vineyard sits on some of the most distinctive soils in the Médoc: Günz gravels (graves garonnaises), interspersed with clay sediments and quaternary terraces. These well-drained, heat-retaining soils are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which accounts for 50% of plantings, complemented by Merlot at 45% and Petit Verdot at 5%. The result is a blend of structure and suppleness — the Cabernet providing the backbone and longevity, the Merlot lending roundness and early approachability. Yields are kept deliberately low, between 28 and 31 hl/ha, a discipline that concentrates flavour and preserves the character of the terroir.

Viticulture and certification

Château Prieuré-Lichine holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification, reflecting a sustained commitment to responsible farming across the estate. Soil management, biodiversity, and the reduction of chemical inputs are central to the viticultural approach — a direction increasingly important to the château's identity under Groupe Ballande's ownership.

The wine range

The château produces wines across two colours, offering both classic Margaux reds and a white expression:

• Red (Rouge) — The principal wine and its second label are Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends, structured and age-worthy, with the elegance and floral lift characteristic of the Margaux appellation.
• White (Blanc) — A less common but noteworthy production from this Médoc château, offering a dry white wine that complements the estate's red range.
