A vineyard rooted in Pauillac's finest gravels

The vineyard of Château Pontet-Canet sits on a plateau overlooking the Gironde estuary in Pauillac. Its deep Günzian gravels over an argilo-calcareous substratum drain freely, warm rapidly and force roots deep — the source of Pauillac's characteristic tension and longevity. The encépagement is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot providing structure, roundness and aromatic complexity.

Three centuries of history, one family's vision

Founded in 1705 by Jean-François de Pontet, Governor of the Médoc, the château was classified 5th Growth in 1855 and acquired in 1975 by Guy Tesseron. His son Alfred deepened the estate's ambitions; today Justine Tesseron leads it with the same exacting standards. Under the Tesserons, Pontet-Canet has undergone one of the Médoc's most significant transformations — in wine quality and in its entire philosophy of viticulture.

A pioneer of biodynamics among the Classified Growths

Pontet-Canet is the first and only Grand Cru Classé certified both organic and biodynamic — under Biodyvin (2010) and Demeter (2014). Horses plough between the rows to avoid compaction; biodynamic preparations follow the calendar; no synthetic chemistry enters the vineyard. The result is a vine population of remarkable vitality and wines of unusual terroir clarity.

The château produces exclusively red wines under the Pauillac appellation across its 81 hectares. The range comprises:

• Château Pontet-Canet — the Grand Vin, a 5th Grand Cru Classé 1855 of considerable depth and ageing potential, built on Cabernet Sauvignon with the minerality and structure that define Pauillac at its finest.
• Les Hauts de Pontet-Canet — the second wine, offering the same biodynamic rigour and terroir in a more approachable, earlier-drinking style.

Both wines are produced under certified organic and Demeter biodynamic conditions throughout.
