Château Lynch-Moussas represents one of the most remarkable stories in the Médoc: a 5th Grand Cru Classé 1855 rebuilt from the ground up, row by row, by a family that chose patience over compromise. Set in Pauillac, in the Gironde, across 62 hectares of günzian gravel croupes, this château produces exclusively red wines of the Pauillac appellation.

A château reborn under the Castéja family

The origins of Château Lynch-Moussas reach back to 1610, making it one of the older estates in the Médoc. The property takes its name from the Lynch family — an Irish dynasty who, like several of their compatriots, settled in Bordeaux and left their mark on the region's wine history. In 1919, Jean Castéja acquired the château, bringing it into a family that would go on to define its modern identity. By the time Émile Castéja turned his attention to the vineyard in 1970, the estate had fallen into considerable decline: fewer than 10 hectares were still under production. Rather than seek a shortcut, the Castéja family embarked on a methodical, decades-long replanting programme, restoring the full 62 hectares to productive viticulture. Today, the property is managed by the Héritiers Castéja under the direction of Philippe Castéja — a continuity of vision that is rare in the Médoc and that we at Halles Quercamps find genuinely admirable.

Terroir: günzian gravel on the Left Bank

The soils of Château Lynch-Moussas are among the most distinctive in Pauillac. The vineyard sits on croupes — gently elevated gravel ridges — composed of günzian gravel, one of the oldest and deepest gravel formations in the Médoc, with a clay subsoil beneath. This combination delivers the natural drainage that Cabernet Sauvignon demands, while the clay reserves moisture during drier periods. The Left Bank exposure across the slopes and plateaux ensures good ripening, contributing to the structured, age-worthy character for which Pauillac is celebrated. The encépagement is built around Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot — a classic Pauillac blend that places the emphasis firmly on depth, precision, and longevity.

Winemaking: rigour in the cellar

The winemaking at Château Lynch-Moussas reflects the same disciplined approach that shaped the vineyard's reconstruction. The château produces red wines under the Pauillac appellation, with an élevage in oak that respects the structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend. The result is a wine of genuine Pauillac character: firm tannins, dark fruit, cedar and tobacco notes that develop with time in bottle — a wine built for the cellar rather than immediate consumption.
