List of products by brand CHATEAU FONPLEGADE
Château Fonplegade is one of the most compelling addresses in the Saint-Émilion appellation for certified organic and biodynamic winemaking. Across 18 hectares of limestone, clay and gravel, this historic château produces exclusively red wines of remarkable precision and depth.
A château steeped in history, reimagined with ambition
Founded in 1852 in Saint-Émilion, the estate passed in 1863 to the Duc de Morny — half-brother of Napoleon III — before joining the Moueix family portfolio. In 2004, American couple Denise and Stephen Adams acquired it for a reported €30 million and embarked on a thorough biodynamic transformation. Over two decades, Château Fonplegade has built a reputation as one of Saint-Émilion's most forward-thinking châteaux.
Terroir: limestone, clay and a south-facing slope
The 18 hectares span three soil types: compact limestone on the upper plateau, clay-limestone mid-slope, and sandy-gravelly soils at the foot. The south-facing aspect ensures generous sunshine, while the plateau's elevation preserves freshness. This mosaic of terroir yields wines of genuine complexity.
Certified organic and biodynamic viticulture
Château Fonplegade holds full certification in both agriculture biologique and biodynamie. The estate uses no synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers, relying on plant-based preparations, compost and a lunar farming calendar. In the winery, minimal intervention ensures the terroir of Saint-Émilion speaks clearly.
The wine range
The château produces exclusively red wines from Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The range includes:
- Château Fonplegade (Grand Vin) — the flagship Saint-Émilion rouge, blending Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the finest limestone and clay-limestone parcels, with careful élevage.
- Second wine — a more accessible expression of the same terroir, offering the house style at an earlier stage and a friendlier price point.
Both wines are produced under the Saint-Émilion AOC and reflect the estate's biodynamic and organic principles.
Why we selected Château Fonplegade
At Halles Quercamps, we selected Château Fonplegade for the rigour of its biodynamic conversion — two decades of genuine investment in soils and vines — and for the quality of its Merlot-Cabernet Franc blends, which balance Saint-Émilion's richness with real freshness. We recommend these wines to Bordeaux enthusiasts who value terroir-driven, organically certified winemaking. The grand vin pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck confit or aged hard cheese.
