A gravel terroir at the heart of Saint-Émilion

Where most of the great estates of Saint-Émilion rest on clay and limestone, Château Figeac is built upon Günzian gravels — ancient deposits of quartz and flint laid over blue clays, forming three distinct ridges that drain freely and warm steadily through the growing season. This exceptional subsoil is the foundation of the château's character: it favours the ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to a degree rarely achieved on the Right Bank, and produces wines of a precision and aromatic definition that set them apart from their neighbours. The western exposure of these ridges, at the boundary between Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, adds a further dimension — a freshness and mineral tension that runs through every vintage.

The Manoncourt family: over a century of stewardship

The Manoncourt family has owned Château Figeac since 1892, making it one of the longest-standing family estates in the Bordeaux classification. It was Thierry Manoncourt who shaped the modern identity of the château across sixty consecutive vintages, establishing the distinctive Cabernet-dominant blend and the meticulous attention to terroir expression that remains the estate's hallmark. Since 2013, Frédéric Faye has assumed the direction of the château, bringing rigour and continuity to a legacy already firmly established. In 2022, this long-term commitment was formally recognised when Château Figeac was elevated to 1er Grand Cru Classé A — the highest tier of the Saint-Émilion classification — joining an elite group of only a handful of châteaux at the summit of the appellation.

Responsible viticulture: HVE certification

Across its 54 hectares, the château holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification, reflecting a genuine commitment to sustainable viticulture. Why we have selected Château Figeac

We have listed Château Figeac because it represents something genuinely rare in Bordeaux: a château where terroir, family continuity, and winemaking conviction have aligned over more than a century to produce a wine of unmistakable identity. The Günzian gravel soils are unlike anything else in Saint-Émilion, and the Cabernet-dominant assemblage is a deliberate, confident expression of that terroir — not a concession to fashion. The 2022 promotion to 1er Grand Cru Classé A is recognition long overdue, and it has done nothing to diminish the estate's focus. This is a château for the collector who values precision over power, and longevity over immediate appeal.
