List of products by brand DOMAINE JEAN-MICHEL DUPRE
Domaine Jean-Michel Dupré represents a particular vision of Beaujolais: granitic terroir worked with patience, old vines tended with exacting care, and a family transmission that gives the wines their coherence and quiet depth.
A family estate rooted in Les Ardillats
Jean-Michel Dupré founded the estate in 1989, starting from just two hectares passed down by his father — land that itself formed part of a viticultural inheritance stretching back several generations. Over the following decades, the estate grew steadily to reach its current 14 hectares, always within the Beaujolais appellation and always guided by the same patient, hands-on approach. Les Ardillats, a commune in the Rhône département on the northern fringes of the Beaujolais region, provides the estate with south-west-facing hillside sites at altitudes between 320 and 380 metres. That elevation tempers the growing season, preserving freshness and aromatic precision in the finished wines.
Terroir: granite, sand, and altitude
The soils at Domaine Jean-Michel Dupré are sandy-loam in texture, with granitic stones present at the surface — a profile that drains freely, warms gently, and encourages the Gamay vine to produce wines of clarity and definition rather than weight. Gamay is the dominant variety across the estate, accompanied by Chardonnay for the white wines. Among the most remarkable parcels are those planted with century-old Gamay vines, some dating to 1911. These elderly plants yield modestly by nature, concentrating what they produce into wines of genuine character and persistence.
Organic farming and HVE certification
The estate is certified organic (Agriculture Biologique) and holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification — a combination that reflects a long-standing commitment to working the land without synthetic inputs. In the vineyard, this means careful soil management, biodiversity preservation, and an attentiveness to each parcel that is only possible at a human scale. The estate's size — 14 hectares farmed as a family unit — makes that level of attention entirely feasible, and it shows in the wines.
The wines: reds and whites from Beaujolais
Domaine Jean-Michel Dupré produces both red and white wines under the Beaujolais appellation. The range reflects the estate's two principal varieties and its commitment to expressing terroir honestly:
- Beaujolais Rouge — Gamay from sandy-loam, granitic soils; fruit-forward and fresh, with the added complexity that comes from old-vine parcels, including century-old Gamay.
- Beaujolais Blanc — Chardonnay grown on the same hillside sites; a less familiar face of the appellation, offering a clean, mineral-edged alternative to the reds.
The estate's daughter, Cindy Dupré, continues the family tradition through the Domaine Centenaire project, ensuring that the century-old vines and the values behind them are carried into the next generation.
Why we have selected Domaine Jean-Michel Dupré
At Halles Quercamps, we have been listing this estate for several reasons that go beyond the label. First, the century-old Gamay vines are genuinely rare — parcels of this age in Beaujolais are few, and they produce wines that reward attention. Second, the organic and HVE certifications are not recent additions but reflect a long-held philosophy of working with the land rather than against it. Third, the family continuity — from Jean-Michel's father to Jean-Michel himself, and now to Cindy — gives the estate a coherence and a sense of purpose that we find compelling. We recommend these wines to enthusiasts who appreciate Beaujolais beyond the primeur category: those looking for wines with genuine terroir character, suited to the table and to the cellar. They pair well with charcuterie, roast poultry, and soft cheeses, and the old-vine reds will reward a year or two of patience.
