List of products by brand THEVENET QUINTAINE
At the hamlet of Quintaine, nestled between Viré and Clessé in the northern Mâconnais, Thévenet Quintaine produces Chardonnay that stands among the most compelling expressions of the Mâcon appellation. Fifteen hectares farmed organically, ancient soils of white marl and clay-limestone, and a family presence stretching back to the fifteenth century: the foundations here are as deep as they come.
A family estate rooted in the coteaux de Quintaine
Clessé, in Saône-et-Loire, is one of the villages that lend the northern Mâconnais its distinctive character. The Quintaine hamlet sits at between 250 and 300 metres altitude on gently sloping hillsides that benefit from good drainage and a favourable south-facing exposure. It is here that the Thévenet family has cultivated vines without interruption since the fifteenth century — an unbroken thread of transmission across generations that is rare even by Burgundian standards.
Jean Thévenet, who shaped the estate's modern identity, was a genuine pioneer: at a time when chemical inputs were the norm across the Mâconnais, he turned to organic viticulture, convinced that the white marl and argilo-calcaire soils of Quintaine could only express their full potential without synthetic interference. His conviction proved well-founded. In 2000, he passed the reins to his son Gautier Thévenet, who continued on the same path and formalised the commitment with Ecocert organic certification in 2008.
Terroir: white marl, clay-limestone and altitude
The soils at Quintaine are dominated by marnes blanches — white marls — interspersed with clay-limestone formations. This combination imparts a characteristic tension and minerality to the wines: the marl retains just enough moisture to sustain the vines through dry summers, while the limestone fraction encourages deep root development and contributes the chalky, saline edge that distinguishes the best Mâcon blancs. At 250 to 300 metres, the estate sits higher than much of the appellation, which extends the growing season and preserves natural acidity in the fruit.
Organic viticulture and measured yields
Certified organic by Ecocert since 2008, the estate works its 15 hectares without synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers. Yields are kept to 42 hl/ha — disciplined for the appellation — concentrating flavour and ensuring that each bottle reflects the specificity of the Quintaine terroir rather than volume-driven viticulture. The sole grape variety grown is Chardonnay, which on these soils produces wines of notable precision and length.
The wines of Thévenet Quintaine
The estate produces exclusively white wines under the Mâcon appellation, all from Chardonnay grown on the Quintaine hillsides. The range reflects the different parcels and their respective soil profiles:
- Mâcon blanc — the estate's principal expression: fresh, mineral and precise, with the characteristic white-fruit and chalky tension of the Quintaine terroir.
- Mâcon-Clessé (where applicable) — a more site-specific expression drawing on the recognised character of the Clessé commune, with added depth and a longer finish.
All wines are vinified to highlight the natural minerality of the soils and the freshness preserved by the estate's altitude, with élevage calibrated to support rather than mask the fruit.
Why we have selected Thévenet Quintaine
At Halles Quercamps, we have listed Thévenet Quintaine for three reasons that matter to us as merchants. First, the integrity of the organic approach: Ecocert certification since 2008 is not a marketing exercise here — it is the continuation of a philosophy Jean Thévenet established long before it became fashionable. Second, the discipline of 42 hl/ha yields, which in the Mâconnais context speaks directly to quality of concentration. Third, the minerality and precision of the whites, which offer genuine complexity at an appellation level that rewards the attentive drinker.
These wines are well suited to the enthusiast who wants a serious, terroir-driven Burgundy white without the scarcity and price of the Côte de Beaune. They pair beautifully with freshwater fish, grilled langoustines, or a well-aged Comté — and they have the structure to develop further in the cellar over three to five years.
