List of products by brand DOMAINE FERRET
Domaine Ferret stands among the historic benchmarks of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. Established in Fuissé, Saône-et-Loire, the estate brings together 17 hectares of Chardonnay across south, south-east and east-facing slopes within the celebrated natural amphitheatre that defines the finest terroirs of the Mâconnais.
Founded in 1840, shaped by pioneering women
The origins of Domaine Ferret reach back to 1840, when the Ferret family first established their vines in Fuissé. What followed was a remarkable chapter in Burgundian history: for more than a century, the estate was guided by a succession of women who proved themselves among the most forward-thinking producers of their generation. The most influential of these was Jeanne Ferret, who in 1942 introduced estate bottling at a time when the practice was far from standard in the Mâconnais — a decision that placed quality and traceability at the very centre of the domaine's identity. Jeanne also devised a parcel classification system distinguishing Tête de Cru and Hors Classe wines, a precursor to the formal Premier Cru hierarchy that Pouilly-Fuissé would only receive decades later. In 2008, Maison Louis Jadot acquired the estate, bringing with it the resources and expertise of one of Burgundy's most respected négociants while preserving the rigorous, parcel-driven philosophy that Jeanne Ferret had established.
Terroir: a mosaic of soils in the Fuissé amphitheatre
The 17 hectares of Domaine Ferret are spread across the slopes surrounding Fuissé, a commune whose geology is among the most varied in the Mâconnais. The soils range from limestone and clay-limestone to marl, schist and volcano-sedimentary sandstone, each parcel expressing a distinct character in the glass. Exposures to the south, south-east and east ensure excellent ripening of the estate's sole grape variety, Chardonnay, while the altitude and natural drainage of the hillside sites preserve freshness and tension — qualities that distinguish the finest Pouilly-Fuissé from more straightforward Mâcon whites.
Organic conversion: a commitment to the long term
Since the acquisition by Maison Louis Jadot, Domaine Ferret has been engaged in organic conversion, moving away from synthetic treatments in favour of practices that respect the biological life of these complex soils. This transition reflects a broader commitment at the estate to expressing terroir with as little interference as possible — in the vineyard as much as in the cellar.
The wines of Domaine Ferret
The estate produces exclusively white wines from Chardonnay, across several parcel-specific cuvées that reflect the diversity of soils and exposures within the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. The range is structured around Jeanne Ferret's original classification:
- Pouilly-Fuissé (village level) — the entry point into the estate's range, combining parcels from across the amphitheatre for a wine of breadth and approachability.
- Pouilly-Fuissé Tête de Cru — a selection from the estate's finest parcels, offering greater concentration, mineral definition and ageing potential.
- Pouilly-Fuissé Hors Classe — the summit of the range, drawn from exceptional individual plots, vinified and aged to express the full complexity of the Fuissé terroir.
Why we have selected Domaine Ferret
At Halles Quercamps, we have listed Domaine Ferret because it represents something genuinely rare in the Mâconnais: a long-standing estate with a coherent, historically grounded philosophy and the technical means to execute it at the highest level. The parcel classification introduced by Jeanne Ferret in the mid-twentieth century remains one of the most thoughtful frameworks for understanding Pouilly-Fuissé, and the ongoing organic conversion signals a commitment to quality that goes beyond commercial calculation. We recommend the estate's wines to confirmed Burgundy enthusiasts who appreciate white wines of precision and structure — those who seek out Chardonnay with genuine mineral character rather than weight alone. At the table, these wines pair beautifully with grilled turbot, a fine Comté aged eighteen months or more, or a classic dish of scallops with a light cream sauce.
