List of products by brand DOMAINE DU PRE SEMELE

Based in Sury-en-Vaux in the Cher, Domaine du Pré Semélé farms 22 hectares across two complementary Sancerre terroirs: kimmeridgian Terres Blanches and portlandian limestone Caillottes. Founded in the 1940s by Maurice and Camille Raimbault on just 3 hectares, the estate is now in the hands of the fourth generation — Julien from 2001, Clément from 2010 — who committed to organic conversion in 2023, producing white, red and rosé from Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this estate for the precision of its terroirs, the consistency of four generations of family stewardship, and the seriousness of its move towards organic viticulture. A Sancerre reference we follow closely.

Domaine du Pré Semélé represents some of the most grounded winemaking in Sancerre: a family line rooted in Sury-en-Vaux since the 1940s, two complementary terroirs, and a viticultural rigour that has sharpened with every generation.

A family estate at the heart of Sancerre's history

It was in the 1940s that Maurice and Camille Raimbault established what would become Domaine du Pré Semélé, starting from just 3 hectares in the commune of Sury-en-Vaux, in the Cher département at the heart of the Sancerre appellation. Over the following decades, the estate grew steadily, passing through the generations with the same quiet determination that characterises the finest family domaines of the Loire. Today, the fourth generation is at the helm: Julien Raimbault joined in 2001, followed by his brother Clément in 2010. Together, they have brought the estate to its current 22 hectares while preserving the identity and integrity that their grandparents built.

Two terroirs, one appellation

The vineyards of Domaine du Pré Semélé are planted on the coteaux de Maimbray and draw their character from two distinct soil types that together define the complexity of the Sancerre appellation. The majority — some 70 to 80 per cent — lies on Terres Blanches, the classic kimmeridgian marls that give Sancerre its celebrated mineral tension and ageing potential. The remaining 20 to 30 per cent is planted on Caillottes, portlandian limestone soils that tend to produce wines of greater freshness and aromatic immediacy. This interplay between the two terroirs gives the estate a natural range of expression across its cuvées, with yields varying between 30 and 65 hl/ha depending on the wine. Both Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir are cultivated, allowing the estate to produce the full spectrum of Sancerre colours.

Organic conversion: a commitment to the land

In 2023, Julien and Clément Raimbault formally engaged the estate in organic conversion, a decision that reflects both a personal conviction and a broader responsibility towards the fragile limestone and marl soils they farm. This transition, while demanding in a Loire appellation subject to Atlantic weather patterns, underlines the long-term vision of a family that has always prioritised the health of its terroir over short-term yield. We regard this commitment as a significant mark of seriousness.

The wine range at Domaine du Pré Semélé

Across its 22 hectares, the estate produces three colours under the Sancerre appellation, each reflecting the distinct character of its soils and the estate's precise approach to viticulture and élevage:

  • Sancerre Blanc — from Sauvignon Blanc on Terres Blanches and Caillottes; the estate's flagship, combining mineral depth with Loire freshness.
  • Sancerre Rouge — from Pinot Noir; a less common but rewarding expression of the appellation, with the elegance that Sury-en-Vaux soils can deliver.
  • Sancerre Rosé — also from Pinot Noir; a delicate, food-friendly style that showcases the lighter side of the estate's terroir.

Why we have selected Domaine du Pré Semélé

At Halles Quercamps, we look for producers whose wines tell the truth about where they come from. Domaine du Pré Semélé does exactly that. Three reasons stand out for us. First, the estate commands two of Sancerre's most instructive soil types — Terres Blanches and Caillottes — giving it a natural breadth of expression that single-terroir estates cannot match. Second, four generations of unbroken family ownership in Sury-en-Vaux is not merely a story: it translates into an intimate knowledge of these specific slopes and a consistency of style that we find rare. Third, the organic conversion launched in 2023 signals a producer thinking in decades, not vintages. We recommend these wines to confirmed Sancerre enthusiasts who want to explore the appellation beyond its most famous names, and to anyone building a Loire cellar with an eye on terroir. At the table, the whites pair beautifully with Loire goat's cheeses — Crottin de Chavignol above all — as well as with grilled river fish and shellfish. The reds and rosés suit charcuterie and light summer dishes.
