List of products by brand DOMAINE CAUHAPE
Domaine Cauhapé has stood for more than forty years as one of the most consistent names in the Jurançon appellation. Based in Monein, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Henri Ramonteu produces exclusively white wines across 54 hectares of argilo-siliceous hillsides in the Sud-Ouest.
A property rooted in the history of Jurançon
The estate appears in local archives as early as 1558, recorded as Caussapé. When Henri Ramonteu took over in 1980, it covered just 4 hectares. Through determination and self-taught mastery, he expanded it to its current 54 hectares, making Domaine Cauhapé a benchmark of the appellation. The estate remains under his direction via the SCEA du Domaine Cauhapé, preserving the independent, artisan spirit that defines it.
Terroir and grape varieties
Vineyards are planted on argilo-siliceous soils on south-east-facing hillsides. The range centres on Jurançon's indigenous varieties: Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng, complemented by Camaralet, Courbu, and Lauzet. Petit Manseng, with its thick skin and capacity for late harvesting, drives the estate's concentrated sweet wines through passerillage. Gros Manseng, picked earlier, produces the fresh, aromatic dry whites of Jurançon Sec. Together they express the full range of the appellation, from crisp mineral whites to richly textured moelleux.
HVE certification and vineyard approach
Domaine Cauhapé holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification — the most demanding tier of France's national agri-environmental framework — covering biodiversity, plant protection, fertilisation, and water stewardship. For us at Halles Quercamps, it is a meaningful marker of seriousness, particularly at this scale.
The wines of Domaine Cauhapé
The estate produces exclusively white wines under the Jurançon appellation:
- Jurançon Sec — dry whites from Gros Manseng, with citrus, white flowers, and a lively mineral finish
- Jurançon (moelleux) — sweet whites from late-harvested Petit Manseng, with exotic fruit, honey, and spice, balanced by natural acidity
- Single-vineyard and prestige cuvées — parcel selections offering greater depth and ageing potential
Across all styles, the hallmark is aromatic precision and an unwillingness to mask terroir character.
Why we have selected Domaine Cauhapé
At Halles Quercamps, we list Domaine Cauhapé because it offers the clearest introduction to the diversity of Jurançon. The viticulture is rigorous — HVE at 54 hectares is no token gesture. The stylistic range is rare: few Sud-Ouest estates let you explore both dry and sweet Jurançon with such consistent quality. And the story matters: Henri Ramonteu's journey from 4 to 54 hectares, on a site dating to the sixteenth century, gives these wines real depth of context.
We recommend Domaine Cauhapé to enthusiasts building a broader picture of South-West France. The Jurançon Sec pairs beautifully with grilled fish, goat's cheese, and Basque cuisine; the moelleux is a natural match for foie gras, blue cheese, or fruit desserts.
