A medieval fortress with a second life

When Comte Stephan von Neipperg acquired the property at the close of 1998, he inherited a vineyard in need of direction. Von Neipperg, already the driving force behind Canon-La-Gaffelière in Saint-Émilion, brought the same methodical ambition to Castillon: a wholesale restructuring of the vines, a sharper focus on terroir expression, and a commitment to low yields that has defined the estate's identity ever since.
Terroir: plateau and high slopes facing due south
The 50 hectares of Château d'Aiguilhe spread across the plateaux and upper hillsides that dominate the valley, with a full south-facing exposure that ensures generous ripening even in cooler vintages. The soils are a blend of argilo-calcaire and argilo-limoneux over a limestone substratum — a combination that provides both the drainage and the mineral backbone characteristic of the finest right-bank terroirs.
