List of products by brand CHATEAU RIEUSSEC

Set on the slopes of Fargues in the Gironde, Château Rieussec is a Premier Cru Classé Sauternes spanning 85 hectares of sandy-gravelly soils above the Garonne. Once the property of the Carmelite monks of Langon, it was classified in 1855 and acquired in 1984 by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), whose stewardship has brought remarkable consistency to the estate. Its rich, complex whites — drawn from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle — represent Sauternes at its most precise. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the reliability of its vintages and the enduring legitimacy of its 1855 classification. A cornerstone reference for lovers of great Bordeaux liquoreux.

Château Rieussec holds a position of genuine authority within the Sauternes appellation. Classified Premier Cru in 1855, the château extends across 85 hectares at the junction of Fargues and Sauternes, its slopes of sandy-gravelly soils commanding views over the Garonne valley below.

A history rooted in the Sauternais

The origins of Château Rieussec reach back to the eighteenth century, when the property belonged to the Carmelite monks of Langon. Sold as a bien national during the Revolution in 1790, it passed through several hands before being formally recognised in the celebrated 1855 Classification as a Premier Cru Classé — a distinction it has held without interruption ever since. In 1984, the château was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), the same group responsible for Château Lafite Rothschild in Pauillac. Under their ownership, the estate has been managed with the rigour and long-term vision one would expect from one of Bordeaux's most respected négociant families. The 2001 vintage brought international recognition of a different order when Wine Spectator named it Wine of the Year in 2004 — a rare accolade for a Sauternes and a testament to the quality achievable on this terroir.

Terroir and vineyard

The 85-hectare vineyard sits at the boundary of the communes of Fargues and Sauternes in the Gironde, on hillside slopes that benefit from the particular microclimate essential to the development of Botrytis cinerea — the noble rot that defines great Sauternes. The soils are predominantly sandy-gravelly clay (approximately 80%), with a further 20% of heavier clay. This combination provides both the drainage and the moisture retention that allow the Sémillon vine — the dominant variety here — to ripen slowly and concentrate its sugars over successive tries, or selective harvesting passes. The exposure of the coteaux, overlooking the Garonne, creates the morning mists and warm afternoons that are the hallmark of the finest Sauternes terroirs. The grape varieties planted are Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle, the classic triumvirate of the appellation.

Winemaking and élevage

Harvesting at Château Rieussec is carried out by hand in successive passes through the vineyard, selecting only grapes affected by noble rot at the optimal stage. Fermentation and élevage take place in oak barrels, a practice that contributes to the structure and ageing potential for which the château is known. The wines are bottled under the Sauternes AOC.

The wines of Château Rieussec

The château produces exclusively white wines, all within the Sauternes appellation. The range includes:

  • Château Rieussec — the grand vin, a Premier Cru Classé Sauternes of considerable depth and ageing potential, built on Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle
  • Carmes de Rieussec — the second wine, offering earlier accessibility while retaining the characteristic richness of the terroir
  • R de Rieussec — a dry white Bordeaux produced from the same vineyard, offering a contrasting expression of the estate's Sauvignon Blanc

Why we have selected Château Rieussec

We list Château Rieussec because it represents one of the most coherent and dependable estates in the Sauternes appellation. Its 1855 classification is not merely historical — it is borne out vintage after vintage by wines of genuine complexity and cellaring ability. The involvement of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) since 1984 has brought a level of investment and consistency that is evident in the glass. The recognition of the 2001 vintage by Wine Spectator as Wine of the Year remains a landmark moment for the appellation as a whole. We recommend this château to confirmed amateurs of Bordeaux liquoreux who are building a cellar with depth and longevity in mind, as well as to those seeking a considered gift for a significant occasion. At table, the grand vin pairs beautifully with Roquefort or a ripe foie gras, though we would equally encourage patience — a well-stored bottle of Rieussec rewards those prepared to wait.
